Party Panache, Safe Social Supper

Last weekend I had the house to myself

so I called one of my BFFs

to see if she and her husband

wanted to come over for a casual “safe” dinner

of appetizers and cocktails

They did!

I was so excited!

I set up a buffet on the kitchen island

It was too hot and buggy on the patio

so we filled our plates with a variety of appetizers

and sat in the family room,

a safe distance apart

Nothing fancy, just simple appetizers presented in a pretty way

I wrapped pineapple chunks in bacon

and gave them a drizzle of soy sauce and baked them

You can read more about this method on Deconstructed Hawaiian Pizza

Cheese tortellini, cooked and tossed with pesto sauce

was skewered with a folded piece of salami

A simplified version of one of my favorites,

Italiano Morsi

They were placed on a tiered tray with toothpicks for easy grabbing

The tiered tray also had savory cheese cookies,

a version of Southern cheese straws

made from a local grocery’s refrigerated dough,

and cherry tomatoes

If you want to make your own Cheese Cookies see the recipe here

or Pimiento Cheese Cookies here

Cucumber spears and celery sticks filled individual bowls

We each had our own bowl,

and could drizzle the vegetables with our choice of

Fleming’s Bleu Cheese Dressing or Honey Mustard

Watermelon chunks joined small clusters of red grapes in a bowl

I made a Lemon version of my Jammin’ Cheese Danish for a sweet treat

Sliced crescent roll dough spread with

sweetened cream cheese and lemon curd

baked and topped with white chocolate curls

The recipe is at the end of this post

My friends brought ham and cheese sliders

and chocolate peanut butter cookies

We had quite a spread!

It was such a treat to have guests over

and share simple food and conversation!

I am looking forward to having more safe gatherings

as the weather cools and we can be back outside on the patio

.

  4. Kitty says:

I’d be sooooo happy with all those food choices, Jenna! I’m so glad that you got together with friends to enjoy some fun, food and friendship.

  5. This is great. I had to think of individual servings for a get-together we had. It’s kind of tricky! You have wonderful ideas and I almost love to socialize like this with small bites even more than a full dinner! Pineapple bacon bites – Mmmm!

    • Thanks so much Leslie Anne, I swear it was so exciting to be able to have even a small “party!” Yes, apps and small bites are my favorite way of socializing, everyone is always more relaxed!

  6. Nancy Sharp says:

Oh my! You give the best recipes. I’m going to use these on my daughters’ and granddaughters’ and my spa weekend! Thank you so much.
So glad you got to spend time with your friends. I sure miss that.

    • Thank you so much Nancy! yes it was so nice to visit in person, and as you can see, I didn’t make anything fancy, so it was no trouble, just totally enjoyable! A girls spa weekend sounds wonderful!

  7. Lovely, it is wonderful to figure out ways to keep our connections!

Oh Jenna, I’m so happy you decided to have friends over for safe and social time. I love the way you served up bites of deliciousness. I love this way of entertaining and I think it equals a sit down dinner, I maybe even prefer it. It will get ever easier I think as fall weather invites us to spend our time outside.

    • It was so much fun Emily, and fingers crossed Al will still play football and we can have friends over outside to watch…stay safe in T-town with all those spiking cases!

  9. Shannon@Belle Bleu Interiors says:

Jenna, I am so happy that you were able to safely have close friends over. It makes all the difference in the world to be able to spend time with those we care about. Monday evening, both my parents and in-laws showed up unexpectedly and we were able to sit on the back deck visiting and drinking sweet tea. I was so happy I thought I could cry! I was so sad when they went home. I pray every day they find a cure so things can get back to normal. You have very lucky friends! I would have so enjoyed a visit at your house with all of these scrumptious appetizers. This is my favorite way to eat. I can’t wait to try the pineapple chunks in bacon. They sound yummy, and I always say bacon makes everything taste better. Take care, and enjoy your day!

    • Thank you Shannon, and yes you know exactly how I felt, I swear I was as excited as a child at Christmas time! We are supposed to have a family reunion on the coast over Labor Day, and I am nervous about it, even though all the entertaining will be outside I’m going to try to get everyone to wear masks.

  10. Pattie says:

I’m so glad that you were able to get together with your friends. Everything looks delicious, and I love your little piggy napkin holder.

    • Thanks Pattie, nothing makes me happier than having friends over! I love my MKC piggy, I scooped him up when he was on sale a few years ago and he is always ready to hold various things on the kitchen island!

  11. Sarah Anderson says:

    Well, my first comment disappeared!
Glad you and your friends were able to get together. We need to be with others!!!
Your setup on the kitchen island is whimsical and as always, the food looks deliciouus. I love the striped piggy. I have the CC guy, but wish I’d gotten this smaller one. The CC pig is adorable, but too big to leave out.
    Happy Wednesda!

  12. Ricki Treleaven says:

Cute idea….and I love the menu! I would love the pimento and cheese cookies, I think! 😀
We have been socializing a lot at the lake, but not here in Birmingham.

We all need each other. We were not created to live as hermits. I’m so happy you had friends over because it’s important to nurture our friendships, especially during times like these!

  13. That’s not appetizers — that’s DINNER! And what a yummy delicious dinner it looks to be.Oh, it looks so good. I would happily break out of my hermit existence to be able to enjoy a feast like that with good friends. I’m glad you were able to see them and to do it safely. Every time we have a distanced gathering, I feel a little bit “normal,” even if we are wearing masks when we aren’t eating and are outdoors, far apart. (I have NO idea how we’ll get through the Michigan winter.”) I’m saving this post — it’s definitely a keeper!

    • Thank you so much Jeanie! As you can see, I really just made simple food, most of which I had on hand, we were just happy to get together! Let’s hope for a vaccine before winter arrives.

  14. Rita C. says:

Glad you could safely be social! That food looks like an amazing feast!!

  15. Shelia says:

Right after my husband died I found a wonderful friend quote:
““Good friends are like stars you don’t always see them but you know they are there.”(Christy Evans)
It has been llke that through the last months–just chatting with friends has helped so much. You managed to have some friends over to “shine” near you AND have a safe, great feast. Lemon tartlets–I’ve got to try those!

    • Thank you Shelia, what a lovely quote and one I shall now always remember! Yes, friends make such a difference, and even virtual friends like you keep me uplifted and in wonderful company! Enjoy the lemon tartlettes, they’re so easy to make!

  16. Lovely says:

You did an amazing job! Stay safe!

What a wonderful spread! YUMMY! So glad you could visit and enjoy each other’s company. So important to be able to visit with friends. Love lemon and will be printing out your lemon tartlets for sure! Thanks Jenna! ♥️🍋♥️🍋

    • Thank you Cyndi! We had so much fun and it felt so normal! The lemon tartlettes are so easy, and you can store them covered in refrigerator, and just reheat a bit before eating

  19. Mary says:

Hurray for entertaining with friends again! Everything looks delicious Jenna and we love grazing and enjoying some bites. Love your cute black & white buffet with the sprinkling of sunflowers ♥

  20. Oh, how I miss entertaining! Everything you’ve put together looks scrumptious and I love the display. The closest we’ve come is pizza with my daughter’s friends alfresco in the heat with multiple outdoor fans .

    • hi Sandra, I can’t tell you how excited I was to prepare for our little gathering, I went about it like I was hosting a large gathering, it made me so happy to be back in my comfort zone! I hope you can have a gathering soon!
