A recent painting I did was the inspiration for my project today
A Painted Pumpkin Crate

Fall is right around the corner,
and I am crazy about pumpkins, real, faux, large, small…
I love them all!

I bought this crate at Hobby Lobby several years ago
and it has been patiently waiting for a makeover

I wanted it to look weathered so I applied white paint sparingly
with a dry brush,
barely dipping the bristles of a large painter’s brush
quickly in and out of the paint
then brushing on the raw wood

When the white was dry
I added some gray paint with the same technique

I used thick acrylic paint to paint the pumpkins
so I could get a little texture
but any acrylic craft paint would be fine

Painting pumpkins is just a series of curved strokes
{see link to a painting tutorial at the end of this post}
I loaded a large round artist’s brush with both orange and yellow
Highlights are instantly created as the colors blend with each stroke

The stems were painted with several shades of browns
I used a flat square brush for the black checks

I painted simple leaves and vines with a combination of greens and yellow

I left one side plain,
and painted small pumpkins and vines on one side,
along with the text Pumpkins!

I couldn’t wait to fill it up with pumpkins!

I lined the crate with a folded black and white checked tablecloth

Then played around with different pumpkins to fill it up

I am going to have lots of fun playing with this crate!

I’m looking forward to filling it with real pumpkins soon

Leaving one side plain leaves more options for using it

Happy Almost Pumpkin Season!

Jenna, Your pumpkin crate is adorable transformed via the magic of your paintbrush! I love the black and white check addition, a la MKC, and the cloth lining it with your pile of pumpkins! I know it will make multiple appearance this fall in your vignettes and tables. I’m hoping fall lasts longer than the 20 minutes it last last year with our unseasonably warm (HOT) September and October weather. Happy to be crafting with you today. âĽ
Me too Mary, sometimes seasons in the south just jump over from winter to summer or summer to winter, cheating us out of lovely spring and fall days! Our craft hops are always full of great ideas aren’t they!!
