Fearless Friday, St. Nick
Today we’re going to have some fun with St. Nick and Zentangle
Zentangle is a pattern drawing technique
that takes doodling to a new height
I’m going to to show you all the steps,
and you can draw and color your own,
or use the free printables {links are at the end of the post}
First, let’s draw this simple Santa
I made a collage of Santa figures I found on Pinterest for inspiration
Then I began to create my own…
I always pick a start point and go from there,
in this case it was the hat brim
Next came the shape of his beard
Then his arm and mitten
I gave him a sack full of toys
And a Christmas tree
I filled in the hat and drew in his face
Next I inked over the pencil lines with a waterproof liner pen
Okay, so let’s talk about Zentangle for a minute…
Zentangle is the technique of creating beautiful images
with a series of structured patterns
Below is a practice grid of Zentangle patterns
Zentangle patterns can be made up of repetitive lines,
swirls, dots, and shapes in an infinite variety of combinations
These combinations form designs that can be colored,
Shaded
or left black and white
Let’s add some patterns to St. Nick…
First, I added lines to section his beard
and circles are drawn on his hat brim
There is no right or wrong, just let your pen or pencil go!
Now let’s give him some color!

My 8 year old grandson, Big E, did this one for us with colored pencils…notice he added a wreath to the tree, presents spilling out the top of the bag and some patches to the toy bag {he said it was worn out because Santa had been using it for thousands of years 😂}

Jenna, this is wonderful and you make drawing look so easy which makes me think I can actually do this. I’m going to sharpen my colored pencils and give it a try!

Your step outs are so helpful. It makes one feel that even as a no-talent (there is no such thing!) one can draw! I hope when the boys are older I remember to look for these so they can learn confidence in drawing. Plus, it is just delightful! I enjoy zentangle now and then, though most of the time I find myself doing it is when I’m just doodling in a zoom meeting or on the phone! It’s great with the Santa!
