Fearless Friday, Raspberry Ripple Sundae

Let’s cool off with some ice cream today…
A big Raspberry Ripple Sundae!
The prompt for this entry for World Watercolor Month was “ripple”
The inspiration photo I used is by Sue Lynn Cotton
I lightly sketched the glass dish first
to make sure I got the proportions right
Then I added the ice cream, whipped cream and cherry
I always sketch very lightly when I’m not using an inked drawing
because the pencil can show through light layers of watercolor
I started with the shadows on the glass,
purposely exaggerating the colors,
Next I painted the raspberry ripple ice cream inside
Next came the whipped cream, chocolate syrup and cherry
At this point it was basically finished, but I wasn’t loving it…
I decided to add some ink outlines to liven it up
And a little raspberry splatter to finish!
“Raspberry Ripple Sundae” 5″ x 8″ watercolor and ink on 140 lb. cold press paper

If you paint with watercolors, what kind of paper do you prefer?
I recently got a pad of hot press watercolor paper,
and I’m not a fan of it yet…
Do you have any tips you’d like to share?
Here’s what I painted for the second week of World Watercolor Month
“Wing” “Gnarled”

“Abrupt” “Hushed”
“Abandon was the prompt for July 13,
but that only conjured up sad images
so I interpreted it in a slightly different way and
painted flowers with “Abandon“
“Ripple” “Faithful”

“Effervescent” “Vision”
Doodlewash has an art challenge every month
with a list of prompts you can use for inspiration
or you can simply paint or draw anything you want
Participating in an art challenge is not only fun,
but it pushes you to draw and paint consistently
and provides an opportunity to experiment and try new things
You can learn more about it here

Jenna, I might be craving a sundae and haven’t had breakfast yet! I love your watercolors and your talent. Happy Friday!
Thanks so much Pam, painting that made me want ice cream too!
You have me crave a sundae! The painted flowers with “Abandon“ look really beautiful.
Thanks so much Angie!
Excellent Jenna! I love the sundae and the way you interpreted abandon. I think my favorite of all is the one with the butterflies. Have a great weekend!
thanks so much Martha, I’m trying to experiment with subjects out of my comfort zone this month, and it’s been a lot of fun!
This would look so cute in an old fashioned ice cream parlor. I’m always amazed at your creativity!
Thank you Leslie Anne and right back at you on the creativity!
I wish there was a good way to erase pencil through watercolor. I’ve tried everything I can think of to no avail! This is VERY happy and cheery!
Thank you Jeanie, another thing you can try is sketching with a watercolor pencil in a light shade of the colors you’ll be using so as you apply the watercolor it will blend in
Wow Jenna, you really captured the ice cream sundae in your art! You do incredible painting. Happy weekend where you are :)………….
Thank you so much Emily!
I like all the prompts and how you painted them, especially the abandon one! I wish I had a raspberry ripple sundae: YUM! Yours even looks delish!
Thanks RJ, some of the prompts are very challenging!
Nice! I thought it was going to be your recipe, but your tutorial is a step by step for the sundae as well as the dessert.
Thanks Linda, no calories ha ha!
Great step by step, Jenna. It looks delicious! 😋 I love the addition of a little ink and spatter at the end. 💗
thanks Patty Anne, the ink really saved it!
Thanks Patty Ann, I love spatter!
Love your artist rendering of the sundae Jenna! I’ve said this before but I love your ‘signature splatter’. ♥
Thank you Mary, the splatter is definitely the fun part of painting!
What a beautifully done watercolor project, Jenna! I love how you show your step by step and sharing with us. Now I want a raspberry sundae!
Thanks so much Kitty!
