Fearless Friday, Mailbox

I’ve been traveling this week and haven’t had time to paint
so today I’m sharing the steps for a mailbox
I did for World Watercolor Month
The prompt was “Home”

I used this photo from Pixabay

I started with a pencil sketch

Then I went over it with ink and began to paint

I used Art Masking Fluid on a couple areas
on the black mailbox where the light is hitting it

Next I added shadows to the post

Then green washes for the grassy background

The flag got a coat of red

and then I painted the flowers

I kept the flowers very abstract with fast, loose strokes
The color draws the eye in to the focal point,
the mailbox

I removed the masking from the highlight areas
and added a few lines to make them more subtle
“Mailbox” 6″ x 8″ watercolor and ink on 140 lb cold press paper

Happy Painting and
Be Fearless!

Your painted mailbox looks even more beautiful than the real thing, Jenna.
Aw, thanks Angie!
Jenna, I love the mailbox. Living out in the country, mine is undecorated. No one but the letter carrier sees it! Happy Friday!
Thanks Pam, my mailbox needs to be painted, ha ha, not the kind of painting I like to do!
How absolutely lovely Jenna. It is always fun to see a photo and then your interpretation. Have a wonderful weekend……..
Thank you Emily, looks like we’re in for some rain next week…ugh!
Jenna, your mailbox painting is beautiful! I love the happy and bright tulips. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, sweet friend! We are off to college later this morning. I pray I can stay strong.
Oh Shannon, thank you, and it’s okay to cry! Prayers…
It’s okay to cry… dear Shannon. Come home to wine and chocolate and potato,
chips and Kleenex. It will help just a little. Hugs!
Love this painted mailbox! It’s beautiful!
Funny story for you… sweet man and I were in Italy a few years back and we were taking a stroll in Fiesole in Tuscany. I came across a mailbox painted red. It was beautiful! As soon as we got back to the LakeHouse I painted ours Fire Engine Red! I love it and I think about that stroll every time I get the mail!
Happy Weekend!
Thanks Nancy, what a great way to keep a memory! I wish I felt like I was in Tuscany every time I got the mail 😂
On my walk today, I saw an old mailbox as part of the lawn decor. I liked it, and it made me wonder what it is that is appealing about mailboxes. There is something about it that surpasses functionality. Ideas? Yours watercolor is very nice!
Hmmm…something about mailboxes conveys a feeling of comfort as in “there’s no place like home?”
That’s a fun happy painting, Jenna. And who doesn’t love mail?!
Thanks Jeanie, all that seems to be in my mailbox these days is junk mail!!
Lovely painting. The mailbox has personality. I would paint our mailbox too if I could. They a re all lined up together and post office issued.
My neighborhood has a rule that the all have to be the same, so boring! But we can put bows and decorations on them which is fun.
Love seeing your art to life Jenna! ♥
thank you Mary, have a great week!
