Fearless Friday, Pastel Boat

A little fun with pastels today…

I am not a professional with pastels

and know very little about this medium,

but I do know they are lots of fun to play with

and from the first stroke you achieve instant color gratification

I photo inspiration pictures and make a collage

that I can print out and keep on my easel

for reference as I paint

This acrylic painting, “Catching the Light” by Brian Cameron was my model

I drew the outline of the boat shape with a pastel pencil

and immediately began to add color

It is important to use pastels in a well ventilated area

as they are messy and produce a lot of dust

that is unhealthy to inhale

You should use a paper blender stick, a piece of cloth, or pastel blending pads,

and not your fingers to blend them for safety

“Pastel Boat” 9″ x 12″ on toned pastel paper

Just a quick, fun sketch, with bright happy colors!

Such a lovely way to enjoy your day. Setting-up on the beach house porch with your great view equates to a lot of fun I’m sure. I can see you sitting there while your pastel boat so easily appears on the canvas. You have such a wonderful gift Jenna, thanks for sharing it! Happy weekend……

  2. That’s a lovely pastel boat, you are truly talented. And I really enjoy the view from your porch.

  3. Oh, I love the boat! So summery, bittersweet at this time of year as the seasons change.

Jenna, what a beautiful pastel of he boat…I want to go sit in it on a lazy summer early fall day.
    Hugs, Kari

  5. What a view, Jenna. Love your pastel. It reminds me of the East Coast. Have a great weekend.

  6. Very interesting on your warnings for pastels. As a kid and young student, Pastels were my chosen medium—I remember saving my pennies to go up and buy one stick of an expensive color—at the local art store. I do remember using spray fixative in between workings and how brilliant the colors would become, and how fun it was to work over and over again. Great tutorial—and I guess it is a miracle to survive all the poisonings we went through as kids from the 50’s. Grins!

    • Thank you Sandi, I think pastels are one of the easiest yet one of the hardest art mediums, if that makes any sense! I need to experiment with spray fixative more, as I said my knowledge is limited, so thanks for mentioning that…

  7. Jenna, I am loving the pastel boat. Your porch is the perfect place to work your magic! Happy Friday!

  8. The beautiful peaceful side of the coast. We aren’t all just hurricanes!

  12. I really haven’t worked with pastels much and after seeing that Heidi Marshall art this summer, I think I need to. This is really fantastic. I hope it goes into Studio 6! The colors are fabulous!
