Fearless Friday, Painting with Markers

I wanted to experiment, and see if it was possible
to get the look of a painted canvas with markers on paper
The painting below, “Elaine” was my model

I did a preliminary sketch,
keeping the pencil lines very light
so they wouldn’t show through the markers

I chose the colors I wanted to use from my marker color chart

Then I tested each color by making a line on the edge of the paper
so I would have another quick visual reference

Then I lined the markers up in the same color order as the lines
so I can easily grab the one I want

Using a limited palette insures that your finished painting
will be coherent
I might add a color or two as I go along,
but too many colors
can make your painting lose focus and be confusing

I quickly realized that it was going to be impossible
to create the thick bold strokes of acrylic
so I decided to use lines in a few places to add interest

An element of texture was added with yellow squiggly shapes

I colored in the background with a soft blue

Then to finish, I went over the shapes loosely with a fine liner pen

Below is a cropped version similar to the inspiration painting

Now I’m dying to paint it in acrylic…stay tuned!

I definitely see the inspiration but it has your own lovely style. I’ve never fared well with the markers but I keep trying!
Oh, thank you Jeanie, I love to color with markers but it is very different from watercolor…you really need a large set with a lot of tones to get good results.
So pretty, Jenna, and I can’t wait to see your “stay tuned” version!
Thanks Kitty, I plan to work on the stay tuned version today!
What a beautiful “painting”! Markers surprise me. I forget how fun they can be to use until I pull them out.
