Fearless Friday, A Squeeze of Lemon
A little fun with acrylics today,
let’s paint a cold drink to enjoy in the summertime!
Pixabay and Unsplash are great sources for free photos
for painting inspiration
Just type what you are looking for in the search bar,
like “cold drink”
and pages of images will pop up for you to peruse
This painting was done with a photo from Pixabay here
I started with a canvas that I painted with black gesso
I established the jar with a few quick strokes
Next I painted the background with indigo blue,
ultramarine blue, white and a touch of turquoise
I loaded a brush with raw sienna, cad yellow medium, and white
to paint the surface the jar is sitting on
Next a lemon wedge was added on the rim
then the jar was “filled” with a creamsicle colored beverage
A couple of straws for sipping
Bubble shapes were painted in the background for interest
along with some herbal leaves next to the jar
More bubbles with varying shades of blues and greens
I added highlights to the jar and colored shadows
At this point, I was not happy with it
and decided to put my brushes away
There is often a stage in a painting when you get frustrated,
and want to give up and toss it away…
This is commonly known as “the ugly stage”
The best thing to do is STOP, walk away
and come back to it later with fresh eyes
The next day I decided it needed another lemon wedge or two
And with a matter of a few strokes,
a lemon wedge, a wedge of lime, a few lemon seeds,
a few more bubbles in the background, adjusting the highlights on the jar
and adding highlights on the herb leaves,
I was happy and this painting was done!

All this painting needed was a “Squeeze of Lemon!”
Remember to STOP and walk away when you get stuck,
then come back later and make a few adjustments
You might just end up with something you love!

Wonderful tutorial. I had to pull out a sweatshirt yesterday after two days of dark skies and rain, but with your art, I think we are getting ready for summer again.
