Shells on the Beach Canvas

Welcome to the June edition of the monthly Creative Craft Hop!

Sara from Birdz of a Feather is hosting,

thank you Sara!

Welcome friends, readers, and visitors~

if you’re coming from Purple Hues and Me I know you’re buzzing

with excitement about her Bumblebee Wall Decor DIY

Today I’m going to show you how to paint a beach scene,

and you don’t have to be an artist~

Create this piece of art to hang in your home

and bring the beach to you anytime!

I used several inspiration photos from Unsplash for reference

Supplies

1 white artist canvas, any size

Sea shells and sea glass, {available at craft stores and Amazon here}

Acrylic paint: you can use artist’s acrylic or acrylic craft paint

white, turquoise, light and dark blue, purple and yellow

Glue {glue gun, E6000, craft glue}

The first step is making the shore line

I chose to make my beach diagonally across the canvas

Then starting from the top left corner paint dark blue

You can use a little water to make the paint flow better

on the canvas if necessary

Try to work quickly, keeping the paint wet

so you can blend the colors together as you paint

As you get near the water line use a softer blue

and/or add white so it gradually lightens

Use more white to lighten and blend in with the turquoise,

and paint more turquoise,

lightening it even more as it nears where the sand will begin

Next paint a very pale purple at the beach edge of the waterline

The purple area is where the sand is very wet from the waves washing in

Paint the beach with a very light yellow, mixing yellow and white

While paint is wet blend a few purplish shadows into the sand

As you are painting the canvas,

continue painting over the edges of all 4 sides

so when it’s finished it won’t need a frame

Make small random strokes with pure white to add highlights

and indicate the bubbling water coming on shore

Apply the highlights with thick strokes of paint,

the texture gives it added interest

When the paint is dry,

arrange the shells the way you want them on the beach

Glue them in place

Hang it up and enjoy!
