Throwback Thursday, Ode to a Master’s Favorite, Pimiento Cheese

The Master’s Golf Tournament is one of the highlights of Spring

in the golfing world and the guys in my family are all avid golfers

The Master’s* is like the Academy Awards of golf,

or the Wimbledon of tennis

or the Super Bowl of Football~

*More about the tournament at the end of this post

One thing the Master’s is famous for is the food,

and their Pimiento Cheese sandwich is a fan favorite

There are a variety of ways to make pimiento cheese,

but I’m a purist, I keep it simple~

Chopped pimientos,

equal amounts of grated extra sharp Cheddar

and Vermont White Cheddar Cheese,

Duke’s mayonnaise, salt & pepper

Besides sandwiches, there are lots of ways to enjoy pimiento cheese

You can mix it up with a little Bisquick and make

Pimiento Cheese Biscuit Bites

Pimiento Cheese also makes a perfect party dip

Mix in a little Worcestershire and cream cheese and heat

for Pimiento Cheese Fondue

I love to make this Zucchini and Pimiento Cheese Strata

and cut it into small squares for delicious bites

They are similar to mini quiches

Pimiento Cheese is perfect for party canapés,

great for last minute appetizers

Pimiento Cheese Canapes

Pimiento Cheese can be paired with bacon and jam,

spread on puff pastry, and cut into rounds and baked for

Pimiento Cheese and Bacon Puff Pastry Eggs

Amp up sausage balls with Pimiento Cheese and green onion

Pimiento Cheese and Sausage Puffs

You can use Pimiento Cheese in place of other cheeses

in vegetable casseroles for a little extra zing

One of my favorites is Zucchini Melange

It’s a mix of fresh corn, zucchini, bacon, onions and pimiento cheese

Spinach is baked in a creamy Pimiento Cheese sauce

for a wonderful side dish

Spinach & Pimiento Cheese Gratin

You can even use Pimiento Cheese on a flatbread!

Pimiento Cheese, Bacon, Lettuce & Tomato Flatbread

Pimiento Cheese is wonderful to have in your fridge!

*A Brief history of the Masters Golf Tournament

My father in law joined the Augusta National Club back in the 1970s when they had open memberships for sale. Today you have to be a patron, meaning an original member or descendant of an original member, to get tickets to the famous Masters tournament every April. It is almost impossible to get a tickets otherwise and if you can get them, they will be extremely expensive. My husband inherited the tickets from his father, and now they have passed to my son, HHjr. HHjr was on the golf team in high school and his team won 2 state championships. Now his son, Super Teen, has the golf bug and is practicing daily to try out for his high school golf team. All that to say they are avid golfers and looking forward to attending the tournament next weekend.

“The Masters … a tradition unlike any other.” For years, television announcer Jim Nantz has used that tagline to describe the prestigious golf tournament held each year in Augusta, Georgia. It’s appropriate because The Masters is a tournament unlike any other and features traditions unlike any other golf tournament in the world, one of which is referring to fans as patrons.

When Augusta National first opened in the 1930s co-founder Clifford Roberts wanted to recognize fans as consumers of an experience rather than a fan or spectator. The use of the term “patron” is meant to differentiate those who attend The Masters from those who attend other sporting events. Augusta National Golf Club places a strong emphasis on tradition and etiquette. No cell phones are allowed and proper attire is required.

What a fun and wonderful tradition of golf you have in your family. With all those delicious pimento recipes, it will be hard to pick one to make.

Three cheers for pimento cheese Jenna, thanks for the round up of recipes! We’re fans of Palmetto Cheese brand and always have a tub in the fridge. My hubby is a golfer and had the opportunity to use a colleague’s tickets to attend the Masters a few times. How fun for HHjr and SuperTeen that your FIL was a patron. Happy Thursday ♥

  5. Pam says:

    Jenna, I love this post! It was so fun to read about the Masters, and thank you so much for all the ways to use Pimiento Cheese. I will confess…shcokingly….I have never had Pimiento Cheese! {sorry, I’m European!}

Now, with your recipe and ways to use, I will be making it! I think it will be a wonderful appetizer because all the ingredients sound fantastic. Thank you! xo Lidy

Jenna I LOVE pimento cheese and you have a wonderful collection of recipes for it. I like to put it on ritz crackers and top with a stuffed olive for a quick appetizer or just a snack. I also appreciated the story of the Masters. I just wish we dressed “appropriately” like we used to. I do miss the NFL coaches wearing suits (and fedoras) as well as the basketball coaches exchanging sports coats for sweats. I guess covid changed how people dress and maybe that is ok and it was time to move on. I know I have seen people wear their pajamas to the grocery store. LOL

    • Thank you Kari, I’m so glad you are a fellow pimiento cheese lover! As to the way people dress these days, I am often shocked at what people are wearing…it’s one thing to wear whatever to run to the grocery store, but I’ve seen people in Dr.s offices etc. that have skimpy work out clothes or things that should never be worn in public. People just don’t show respect to anything these days…

Oh, the delicious treats you shared today! I love a good pimento sandwich.
How wonderful that your family is still among the patrons of the event.
Such a fun tradition in your family.
    We enjoy watching the Masters.
And I am cheering on the super teen!

    • Thanks Nancy, it’s hard to beat a pimiento cheese sandwich! I am looking forward to watching the Masters and picturing the guys there enjoying it! Super Teen will come back really pumped about golf!

  14. I love pimento cheese and your puff pastries are such a great idea! I’ve never used the official Master’s recipe, but I think I’ll give it a try. Thanks Jenna!

  15. Cheers to pimiento cheese sandwiches – can’t remember the last time I had one!!!!!
