Blue Heron
I am often scrolling around Pinterest and recently
this art print caught my eye
It reminded me of the blue heron, Freddy,
who adopted us at the beach
I was taken by the artist’s loose style and Fearless use of color~
I couldn’t wait to try to paint this!
No sketch, just dive in!
With watercolor, always start with lightest areas first,
adding succeeding layers in darker tones
I began to add the rest of the bolder colors
when I realized something was off…
His legs!
His legs are too short!
When you want to change something done with watercolor,
immediately saturate the area with water with a clean brush,
“erasing” the area as much as possible
It wasn’t perfect so I added shallow water
to look like he was wading on the beach
“Freddy” 8″ x 10″ watercolor on watercolor paper
When you think you’ve made a mistake,
don’t wad up your paper and toss it away,
go to “Plan B” and turn it into a happy accident!
Be Fearless!

Beautifully done!
Thanks Dorothy!
I’ve been painting the past few days and I love your encouragement! I’ve added lots of “Plan B” lately! Happy weekend and happy painting!
I love to hear you’ve been painting! I usually have a lot of “Plan B”s too 🙂
I love your Freddie! The colors are marvelous. And your free style is as free as a bird!
haha, thanks Jeanie and happy painting!
I love Freddy, great job, Jenna! Happy weekend!
Thank you Pam, Roll Tide!
Colorful Freddy seems to enjoy being in the water! Yes, to being fearless!
haha, Thanks Mary!
What a soaring genius you are! So love “the save” on your Freddy. It’s a life lesson and an art lesson all in one. And that, dear Jenna, is why you are a priceless part of our lives. Georgia Gal (planning to “Be Fearless!)
Thank you Sheila, I so hope you pick up your paint brush!
Your Plan B with Freddy is a remarkable success story!
Thank you Linda!
That turned out great, Jenna! Love the colors. We have a resident blue heron too, and this morning while we were walking I heard what sounded like a duck, but it was the heron…..flying overhead, away from the river!
Thank you Rita! I just love to watch them and all their funny quirks!
Love your version of Freddy Jenna! We have a blue heron that fishes from our dock every day. They’re very patient fishermen. 🙂 Happy Weekend ♥
I love to watch them!
This was fun – watching both the process and the finished painting. I love herons, you did them proud.

Thanks so much Sandi, it was fun to paint!
This is beautiful Jenna – love the colors and sweeping strokes! I don’t think I would have noticed that his legs were too short if you hadn’t said so, but you had a great plan B! Happy Monday!
Thank you sweet Kim!
I love Freddy! How talented you are.
Thank you!
Great save Jenna!! Freddy turned out beautiful!
haha, that’s what I get for not doing a sketch first!
