Blue Heron

I am often scrolling around Pinterest and recently

this art print caught my eye

It reminded me of the blue heron, Freddy,

who adopted us at the beach

I was taken by the artist’s loose style and Fearless use of color~

I couldn’t wait to try to paint this!

No sketch, just dive in!

With watercolor, always start with lightest areas first,

adding succeeding layers in darker tones

I began to add the rest of the bolder colors

when I realized something was off…

His legs!

His legs are too short!

When you want to change something done with watercolor,

immediately saturate the area with water with a clean brush,

“erasing” the area as much as possible

It wasn’t perfect so I added shallow water

to look like he was wading on the beach

“Freddy” 8″ x 10″ watercolor on watercolor paper

When you think you’ve made a mistake,

don’t wad up your paper and toss it away,

go to “Plan B” and turn it into a happy accident!

Be Fearless!

What a soaring genius you are! So love “the save” on your Freddy. It’s a life lesson and an art lesson all in one. And that, dear Jenna, is why you are a priceless part of our lives. Georgia Gal (planning to “Be Fearless!)

That turned out great, Jenna! Love the colors. We have a resident blue heron too, and this morning while we were walking I heard what sounded like a duck, but it was the heron…..flying overhead, away from the river!

  8. Mary says:

Love your version of Freddy Jenna! We have a blue heron that fishes from our dock every day. They’re very patient fishermen. 🙂 Happy Weekend ♥

This is beautiful Jenna – love the colors and sweeping strokes! I don’t think I would have noticed that his legs were too short if you hadn’t said so, but you had a great plan B! Happy Monday!
