…………………………………………………….

Okay, let’s have some fun!

A glossy photo, + a simple sketch and layers of color = a colorful bouquet for Cinco de Mayo!

The first thing I learned as an art student was the importance of a sketch book, and using it daily

Even if I can’t paint every day, I try to do a quick sketch or two

Drawing daily improves your skill and the way you “see” things and you will be amazed at how it spurns ideas and gets your creative juices flowing

When drawing I encourage you NOT to sketch with an erasable pencil,

Use a fine liner pen and don’t sweat perfection

If you keep erasing you will never gain the 2 things you need for success, speed and confidence

You can make adjustments when you start to fill in with color

I packed a small travel bag full of everything I need to grab and go so I can sketch anywhere

Whether I’m going on the road or just outside, this 13″ x 13″ tote is a perfect size…big enough to hold the essentials, but small enough to be compact and light

It holds a 6″ x 8″ sketch book, a set of markers and liner pens, and a book or magazine for ideas

Markers are pricey, but I found this set of 40 Ohuhu double tip markers on Amazon for $22 and decided to try them

The reviews said the colors were a little wonky, but that actually appealed to me, I can balance them out with pencils and markers I already have

I made a color chart for reference and everything I need is right at my finger tips

I like to start by building color from lights to darks

At this point I used colored pencils to soften some areas

Colored pencil is effective for blending and softening the intense marker

“Summer in a Jar!”

Art in a tote bag!

Last week I asked if anyone wanted to share their artwork or inspired creations

My very talented fellow artist Johanne Lamarche was kind enough to send me this photo of her fabulous recent work

3′ x 3′ oil painting with cold wax and gold leaf

I know this is even more stunning in person!

You can visit Johanne at French Gardener Dishes, where her recipes and gardening posts are works of art too

Thanks for sharing Johanne, you are fearless!
