Fearless Friday, Pumpkin Stack

I have been a little pumpkin-sunflower crazed lately,

I just can’t help it, they make the world so happy!

Today we’re going to do a pumpkin stack in colored pencil

This photo and arrangement is from Southern Living

Before we start drawing and coloring, let’s talk a little about the process involved before the drawing/painting begins

I want to stress the importance of making a color chart for all your different mediums

Color charts make it easy to see all the colors and tones you have and helps make color selections fast and successfully

Once I have my colors selected, I often make a smaller color chart on the edge of the paper for quick reference

Whenever I use markers and/or colored pencils, I always pre-select my pens/pencils using my color charts and pull the colors I want from their individual locations

I use a separate glass or jar to hold the colors I’ve selected or lay them out on a table in a line

BUT!

I now I’ve found this handy dandy organizing tool

The rubberized insert grabs and holds pens, pencils, and markers perfectly!

The holes vary in size and are flexible so they can hold any size or shape of pen

It is so much easier to have the selected colors right at hand

rather than lost in a sea of supplies

where you can waste a lot of time looking for the color you want

This tray of all my pens and pencils sits by my desk

I can easily add another color or grab anything else I need

Okay, now we’re organized, let’s get started!

First a light pencil sketch

I used a soft yellow and pale green to color in the light areas,

then an apple green for the remaining skin

The same yellow and green were blended for the flower centers

The petals were colored light pink in their highlight areas

A deeper pink/magenta edges the petals and recesses

The pumpkin got some pale pink highlight areas,

golden brown for the crevices and a yellowish beige for the body

I just kept moving to the different areas, blending, shading, coloring…

Almost done…

“Pumpkin Stack”  7″x 10″ colored pencil on mixed media paper

Looking at them side by side I see more things I could do,

some of the areas could be darker,  the pumpkin needs more rounding,

But this was just for fun, coloring and relaxing…

Have fun and Be Fearless!
