Let’s illustrate a recipe today 🍅
This is a fun project and you can practice different lettering styles too
I chose one of my favorite appetizers
Tomato Canapes with Bacon Chive Aioli
The canapes are colorful and the recipe is very short,
making it a good choice for recipe illustration
I used 2 photos from my blog post here
I started with a rough pencil sketch,
going shape by shape,
beginning with 2 halved tomatoes and a lettuce edge
I don’t worry too much about the sketch,
I just am trying to get familiar with drawing the subject
When I go back over the sketch with ink
I can make corrections as I go
After drawing the ingredients, I added the text
I used a 01 waterproof micron liner pen to finish the illustration
and then erased all the pencil
Originally I was going to use watercolor,
but I changed my mind and used markers
I bought a new set for Christmas that I absolutely love,
Caliart 121 colors dual tip markers, great price and good quality
They are organized by color on the lowest level of my Tiered Art Tray
Now the coloring fun begins!
I used shades of red, yellow and orange for the tomato halves
and shades of green for the romaine
More green shades on the green onions
and reds and browns for the bacon
I filled in the grape tomatoes with shades of red and orange
and began coloring the letters
Next the mayonnaise jar and it was almost done
I used a Zig Clean Color Dot pen to fill in the background

This is the 3rd recipe illustration I have done recently,
I encourage you to try this, it’s a lot of fun!
You could frame your illustration and hang it in the kitchen
or gift it to a friend along with the recipe ingredients
