Kentucky Derby Straws

Hello!

Today we’re going to make some festive straws

for a Kentucky Derby watching party

The Kentucky Derby Horse Race is always

on the first Saturday in May

For the past five years we’ve had a Kentucky Derby party

and it is so much fun!

This year our drinks will be garnished with Kentucky Derby hat straws

These straws aren’t for sipping, they’re for stirring!

I saw Derby Hat drink stirrers on Pizzazzrerie

and knew I had to make some for this year’s party

I started looking through my craft stash

and collected fabric, ribbon, paper flowers~

I found a lot of things that could work!

I started by cutting circles from card stock using a template

I cut squares from different fabrics

and glued the card stock circles

to the backside of the fabric

I didn’t want to use my glue gun for this

because hot glue doesn’t dry flat

I was going to use spray adhesive but my can was clogged

so I used Tack It white glue

Once the circle is glued to the wrong side of the fabric,

cut around the edge of the circle

and now you have the hat base

Once the glue dried the fabric was firmly in place

Then I just got busy having fun matching the fabric circles

to various flowers, ribbons and leaves

I did use hot glue to attach them to the fabric circles

because it would quickly hold them securely in place

and would not be visible

And Voilà, hats!

I made 7, 6 for the girls attending the party

plus an extra just in case

Next I paired them with a colored striped straw

Glue the straw to the center of the hat bottom

with hot glue, at a slight angle

Here are collages of all 7 straws

Perfect for a special cocktail!

Cheers!
