Creations, Burlap Candy Corn Mats and Easy Candy Cookies

Visions of candy corn have been dancing in my head!  All of a sudden I am crazy over the stuff~nnnnnoooo, not to eat, but to decorate with…

This idea just lept into my head the other night…candy corn burlap place mats

The hardest part of this project was designing the layout for easy spray painting

But I did the hard work for you and if you decide to try this, it will be easy peasy

A piece of white burlap, 2′ high x 3′ wide will yield 4 burlap candy corns, about 13″ x 24″.  Section the burlap horizontally into 3, eight inch sections using masking tape

Then mark the burlap on each long edge, 13″-14″ There will be 2 upside down, so offset the point markings on each side with this in mind.  It helps to draw it on a piece of paper if you get confused.

Tape paper over the top and bottom sections, securing with masking tape or painters tape

Spray the middle section orange and let dry

This is where is gets a little tricky~ the 4 candy corns are in a row, every other one is upside down. Tape off the white points of the right side up candy corns framing the yellow sections of the upside down ones.  Make sure you cover the middle orange section too.

Once you have the white points and the orange mid sections securely taped down, spray the yellow sections

I know this looks like a hot mess…

But it worked!  {Oh,and don’t spray paint your bricks like I did!  Shhhhh! luckily I had some gray paint and did a quick touch up….HH will never know~}

Now all you have to do is cut them apart and trim excess white off the end ones

and you have 4 lovely giant pieces of candy corn!

I have lots of plans for these, they will keep showing up in unexpected places!  You must be hungry after all that spray painting, would you care for some candy corn or maybe a cookie?

The cookies pictured above have been all over Pinterest so I decided to make them for last weekend’s football game party. These 4 ingredient cookies are a quick to make treat, and to me they are sort of like a chewy shortbread and not overly sweet.

There are lots of different pins of the same recipe, so I don’t know where it originated, but I pinned mine from Chef in Training~it’s not quite as good as a homemade cookie, but you can’t beat it for easy!  One of my friends, who is an eat dessert first kind of gal, declared them delicious!

Have you seen the candy corn oreos?  I really like these!  But it might be my current candy corn obsession~

Super Boy asked, “Is that real candy Gigi?”

“Yes, ” I answered, “but it doesn’t taste good, I just use it for decorating…….”

“It tastes sort of like wax,” said HHjr

Super Boy didn’t look convinced at all~

“Would you like to try a piece?” I asked

Picture a vigorously nodding head~

“Yummmmmmmm! I love it!” he declared

“What, candy corn?” asks HH, coming around the corner, “that is my favorite!”

Just goes to show that everybody has different tastes and opinions!

So just in case you don’t like candy corn, here’s the recipe for the cookies:

Keyword cake mix cookies, candy cookies, chocolate caramel cookies, cookies, easy cookies, Rolo cookies
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 regular size box of vanilla or yellow cake mix
  • 1 5 oz can evaporated milk
  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • 40-50 Rolo candies
  • 1 cup butterscotch chips optional

Instructions

  • Combine cake mix with butter and milk and beat to combine.
  • Divide in half and put half of batter into a greased 9 x 13 baking dish. The batter is sticky so use the back of a spoon and try to spread it out. Bake at 350 for 9 minutes.
  • Cut Rolos in half and place caramel side down on top of baked layer.
  • Drop the other half of batter by spoonfuls over Rolos.
  • Return to oven and bake 20-24 minutes more, until just golden, do not over bake. Top with butterscotch chips if desired. Let cool and cut into bars or squares.

Try to find the snack size Rolos, the are wrapped 3 to a roll so they are easier to undo and you can slice them 3 at a time.

The more the merrier!

They’re not very pretty so I tried to jazz them up with some sparkling sugar!  I really wanted to top them with butterscotch chips hot out of the oven but I didn’t have any~next time for sure!

Which would you prefer, some candy corn or a Rolo cake mix cookie?
