How about some wine and cheese today?
I have been enjoying the June Doodlewash Challenge
These monthly challenges are a great motivator
to draw and paint every day
There is a list of prompts that you can use for inspiration
I painted this wine and cheese scene from the daily prompt “cheese”
A photo from Pixabay was my model for this painting
I began with a pencil sketch
After I finished the pencil drawing
I went over parts with some very light lines
with a .01 waterproof fine liner pen and erased the pencil
I began applying light watercolor washes
on the cheese board
Then the bleu cheese
Then the grapes,
keeping in mind where the highlights would be
Next I “poured” a little wine into the glass
painting the darkest areas with Crimson Lake
I added lighter washes to the grapes and glass
and began painting the leaves with the wet-in-wet technique
The leaves are painted with
Hooker’s Green, Daniel Smith Sap Green*, Permanent Green Light,
and then I dropped in a touch of Crimson Lake while the leaves were still wet
I painted the bottle with M. Graham Sap Green*
{it’s a little darker than the Daniel Smith sap}
*Colors and hues can vary by manufacturer
and added reflections on the wine glass stem
To finish,
I painted the bottle’s label with a very light wash
of Lemon Yellow and Yellow Ochre
I indicated text with marks with a .01 black liner
The background is a wash of Payne’s gray
The foreground was painted with wet in wet technique
using Quinicridone Gold, Yellow Ochre,
and a touch of Crimson Lake
“Wine and Cheese” 9″ x 12″ watercolor and ink on 140 lb. cold pressed paper
Coming up is World Watercolor Month
The month of July has been officially named as World Watercolor Month
Artists from all over the world will be participating
and raising money and awareness for art education
“World Watercolor Month is an annual global charitable event featuring the ultimate challenge of 31 Watercolors is 31 Days! artists around the globe come together to paint the world with beautiful watercolor and help raise awareness for arts education to get art supplies for kids who need them via The Dreaming Zebra Foundation.”
Visit the Doodlewash souvenir shop here and make a purchase or make a direct donation to support this great cause!
This year the prompts include feelings, adjectives, places and objects, it should be really fun to see how the artists interpret these prompts for their paintings!
To participate, create a watercolor painting {they do not have to be from the prompts, that’s optional} Post your painting on social media with the hashtag #worldwatercolormonth
Here are the prompts for July
I can hardly wait to get started!!
I hope you’ll join in!
