I am totally in an “all things October” mood
This colorful Night Owl was inspired by colorful owl images
I often turn to Pinterest for art inspiration
and was inspired by these real and fantasy owls
So I combined things I liked for my own interpretation
of a colorful October owl
I started with a pencil sketch
If you look closely where the arrows are pointing
you can see the first steps are done with a series of dashes
indicating the shapes
The dashes help me get the main shapes correct
and then I build from there
When I was happy with the sketch,
I inked over the pencil lines with a waterproof .01 micron pen
and filled in the shapes with Zentangle like patterns
Next I decided to add drama with a black background
using a black chisel tip marker
I decided to use colored pencils to add color,
and started with coloring the moon pale yellow
and adding a rim of darker yellow
then orange on the perimeter
Next I began coloring the tree and owls,
just choosing colors and making decisions as I went along
Crazy and unexpected,
just whimiscal fun, and very relaxing
When everything was colored I outlined everything with a silver gel pen
“Night Owl” 7″ x 10″ colored pencil and ink on mixed media paper
