Fearless Friday, Painting Pilgrims and Thanksgiving Vignettes

Today we’re going to paint some easy pilgrim people

and other Thanksgiving things

so you can make place cards, paint a platter,

a pitcher or glasses,

or whatever you can think of!

This platter features a border of pilgrims, turkeys and pumpkins

and I am going to show you how easy it is to recreate

These Thanksgiving icons are just a series of shapes

This craft paint can be used for almost any surface, including glass

It is acrylic, cleans up with water and items can be cured

{baked in a 325 degree oven for 1 hour}

so that they are top rack dishwasher safe

{Follow directions on paint bottle}

To paint the pilgrims, let’s start with the face

I create a peachy complexion

with white mixed with just a touch of orange and yellow

I paint the round faces with a small regular brush, then

I switch to a small flat square brush to paint the rest of the figures

The trick is to use short, quick deliberate strokes,

3 straight strokes for her dress,

3 strokes curving in for his upper body,

and one stroke for each of his legs

You can see the progression of steps in the collage below

I like to practice my design on a piece of tin foil,

rather than paper,

because the slick surface is similar to glass or ceramics

Below you can see the shapes painted on paper,

along with a few strokes indicating pumpkins

and the large round shape that will become a turkey

Below are the steps for painting the turkey,

beginning with the large round body,

then a sort of question mark shape for the head and neck,

a red wattle, then lots of feathers and an eye

See the steps in the collage below

Practice a few times on paper or foil

before you start painting your piece,

and the great thing about painting on glass or ceramics is

that if you mess up,

you can simply rinse it or wipe it off before it dries,

and start again!

The pumpkins got a stroke of brown for stems

and a few twisty vines and green leaves

And that’s all there is to it!

Another thing you can do is use card stock

and make place cards for your table

So…have some Thanksgiving fun!
