Kitchen Tips and Tricks, Mother’s Day Edition!

Happy Mother’s Day!

What could be a better gift for mom

than a few tricks and help in the kitchen?

The other day I went to run the very full dishwasher

and discovered I was out of dishwasher soap…

After a quick internet search I discovered this tip:

After loading the dishwasher, add a few DROPS of mild liquid dish soap to the appliance’s detergent cup. Add 1 1/2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of salt {source hunker}

It worked so well I did it the next day too!

Sub chicken broth for water when boiling pasta or rice

it adds so much flavor

You can also use chicken, beef, or vegetable broth to cook any grains that don’t need to be strained, like quinoa, rice, or couscous. It makes them taste so much more flavorful than simply cooking them in water

Couscous Salad with Spinach, Corn and Tomatoes

Add a bit of mayonnaise to your beaten eggs before scrambling

or making an omelet or quiche

It adds volume and makes them light and fluffy…

Mayonnaise is also wonderful spread on the outside of bread

for grilled cheese sandwiches

Out of powdered sugar? No problem!

Mix 1 1/2 cups granulated white sugar

with 1 Tablespoon cornstarch in a blender

After blending let sit for a minute for mixture to settle

Makes about 2 cups

Remove scuff marks from dishes with Bar Keepers Friend

it works like magic!

Marinate raw chicken in buttermilk for 6-24 hours

if possible before cooking

The chicken will be so tender

Picnic Chicken

When baking scones, muffins and biscuits

put the cream or milk into the freezer for 15 minutes

Instead of cutting the butter,

melt it and add it to the very cold cream

and it will form small goblets

When you pour this mixture into the dry ingredients,

the butter is automatically evenly distributed

throughout the batter…so much easier

than the usual method of breaking cold butter down

into the dry ingredients with a fork!

Raspberry Scones with Lemon Cream Glaze

Freeze fresh herbs in an ice cube tray with olive oil

Source Listotic

Just pop an ice cube or two into a skillet when you saute vegetables,

or stir them into hot potatoes

or melt the cubes

and toss the olive oil and herbs

with the vegetables or potatoes before roasting
