Fearless Friday, Teacup Rose

Today I’m going to share a Teacup Rose painting

using colored pencils and watercolor

This is the inspiration photo I used

The flowers are the focal point and the teacup sort of fades

into the background

First a pencil sketch starting with the large rose

then I drew in the smaller flowers

Then the teacup with a few loose shapes

indicating the pattern on the china

This is when I got the idea to do the flowers with colored pencil

to make them grab the eye

and then the cup loosely with light watercolor washes

so it fades into the background like it does in the photo

I inked over the flowers, cup and saucer

then erased the pencil and removed the pattern on the china

since I just wanted to loosely suggest it with watercolor

You can download this here if you want to color it your own way

I started by coloring the lightest areas of the yellow rose,

using a pale yellow pencil,

then adding deeper and deeper yellows

Then the pink rose and the daisies

Then I did the last flower and leaves

For the teacup I started by adding very loose shapes

of pale pink watercolor

to indicate the pattern on the china

Then I added some green, with both a light and darker green

Then gray shadows and a gold rim around the saucer to finish

“Teacup Rose” 6″ x 9″ mixed media {ink, colored pencils,watercolor}

Have fun experimenting with different media combinations and
