I am participating in the 31 day challenge for World Watercolor Month, sponsored by Doodlewash & the Dreaming Zebra Foundation
This charity provides music and art supplies for underprivileged children and young adults all over the world, so they can learn to express themselves creatively.
It is such a great cause, a month to inspire people to paint with watercolor while raising awareness for the importance of art and creativity. Watercolor always challenges me, so I felt like doing this challenge could really help me experiment and get more comfortable.
To kick off the month, I painted fresh vegetables, using this beautiful photo from Food Network magazine as my model
First step is laying in color shapes with light washes to establish composition
Once the composition was laid out I focused on the radishes
Adding layers of colors to deepen the tones
Next I added more darks to the leaves and began filling in the background
The deep dark areas surrounding the radishes really make them pop
Now for some work on the beans
Asparagus
At this point I usually get so involved in the finishing details,
I forget to take photos, and all of a sudden it’s done!
I used a small brush and quick “flick-like” strokes to do the details on the asparagus spears and tips, and a liner brush to define the radish bottoms and the leaf veins
I will be mixing it up all month, trying different styles and methods
