I want to thank everyone for your prayers and concerns for my fellow Alabamians impacted by the recent tornadoes…Alabama generally gets only negative publicity– storms, politics, racial issues…but it is truly a magnificent and beautiful state. We have mountains, lakes, beautiful trees, waterfalls, mild winters, and sugar white sandy beaches on our gulf coast…and most importantly, the kindest, friendliest people anywhere.
For today’s Fearless Friday I want to show you this step by step watercolor I painted when I was on the coast a few weeks ago
The caption reads, “This was such an inspiring landscape in Talladega County. A bountiful cornfield with the Talladega Mountains in the distance.” John Shadrick, Alabama magazine
It was warm enough to paint outside that day
Did you know that watercolor artists in cold climates
who paint outside add vodka to their brush water
to keep it from freezing??
If it’s that cold I’d be painting inside!!
This is just a simple painting, swashes of color mimicking the distant sky, mountains and trees
Working toward the foreground, I added more color to the field and indicated the flowers
Next came the clouds, very loosely suggested
Then a little more definition with lines, darkening of the sky and mountains,
and indication of the corn stalks with fast, loose strokes
A few more lighter strokes indicating the stalks further away,
fading into the distance
and stems for the flowers in the foreground
Be sure to look at your paintings in a frame,
Frames can make a big difference!
Try relaxing and experimenting with your paint brush,
Let yourself go and see what happens…
Be Fearless!
