This painting was inspired by one of the daily prompts from World Watercolor Month
“quiet time”
It is really fun to interpret the prompts and find a subject you want to paint
Looking through photos on Pixabay
this book stack topped with a bloom caught my eye…
Reading is perfect for quiet time!
I began with a very light pencil sketch
very pale so I don’t have to worry about the pencil lines showing later
sorry the photo is so awful…
I put light washes on the areas where the highlights are
Since the flower is the top element, I painted it first
so then I could tuck in the books underneath
I used the wet into wet technique to paint the petals,
adding areas of clear water to the petals,
dropping in Quinacridone Pink and letting it “bleed”
as it spread out in the water
When the petals were dry I added green stems and the large leaf
Next I began to work on the books by building the colors with layers of washes
A shadow in the foreground was added to ground the books
Light ink fine lines were added to finish
“Quiet Time”
6″ x 5″ watercolor and ink on 140 lb. cold pressed paper
What is the first thing you think of for “quiet time?”
Happy Creating,
Be Fearless!
