Fearless Friday, Poinsettias

My birthday was Wednesday and I’ve been busy celebrating

and getting ready for a birthday cocktail party

I’m having tonight,

so my paint brush has been idle…

I planned to paint poinsettias today,

my favorite holiday flowers

Since I didn’t have time to paint,

I remembered this watercolor one from the archives

that I am re-sharing today because it’s one of my favorites

I like to begin with a pencil sketch

when the subject is complicated like this one

with so many petals and leaves

I especially like pink poinsettias

They are full of so many beautiful colors and tones

I bounced around painting different areas

so the layers could be drying as I went to a different spot

As I filled in the shapes with color I began erasing the sketch

Once pencil lines are painted over it’s hard to get rid of them

I started laying in the background

to give the petals even more definition

More work on the petals…

Jumping around between different areas also helps

keep everything balanced and cohesive

I filled in the rest of the background

with very loose leaf shapes with a large round brush

After the paint was dry, I added some accents with ink

Happy Painting,

Be Fearless!
