Happy Fearless Friday!
This month, in the recipe department of the Painted Apron,
we are celebrating the beginning of strawberry season in the South
You can see a round-up of great strawberry recipes here,
Definitely make the Fresh Strawberry Dressing!
Since we are winding up April, I had to have a little strawberry fun in my sketchbook
This is sort of a half and half, drawing/painting
This giant berry is going to be half realistic watercolor and half funky fun berries in colored pencil and marker
The watercolor side began with a light wash in the highlight areas, then the blending in of medium tones
At this point I let it dry before going to the next step
You can use a handy mini dryer to speed up the process
I started in on the small strawberries while the watercolor was drying completely
I almost always start by singling out the colors I want to use, and making a mini color chart to refer to
I began with a berry in colored pencil
Then a few berries with markers
Don’t worry if you bleed over the lines a little, you can fix it later with either a white gelly pen or a white paint pen
Back to the watercolor side where I began laying in details
More berries, more details, back and forth, and this bursting berry was almost done
With final scrutiny I decided the watercolor berry needed darkening and actually used a red Tombow Dual End Marker and blended it in with a water brush
There you have it, one big bursting berry!
Have fun and Be Fearless!
