Take-out Tuesday, Mama Mia Sliders

grand old flag

Mama Mia, it’s election day!  Let’s pray the madness will be finally over one way or another!

Ok, this recipe can be complicated or simple it’s up to you!

The complicated part would be if you want to use homemade Bolognese Sauce…

Bolognese sauce is a wonderful sauce, thickened with several kinds of meat, traditionally sausage, ground pork, and sometimes bacon, carrots, tomatoes…

Make up a batch and freeze it in portions and you will be happy for a long time…

But if you don’t have a stash on hand you can add browned meat to a jarred marinara, the key is to add enough so your sauce will be thick

Hawaiian Rolls, Bolognese Sauce, Pepperoni, Parmesan and garlic parsley butter

I cut the rolls in 2 sections, making 6 at a time

Spread bottoms with a thick layer of sauce

Sprinkle sauce with Parmesan

Microwave pepperoni slices in between paper towels for 20 seconds to render fat and lay on top of sauce and cheese

Another sprinkle of cheese

Place the tops on each section

Carefully cut bread into the individual roles and place on foil

Brush roll tops liberally with garlic butter and sprinkle with parsley

This recipe was adapted from Pepperoni Pizza Sliders from Damn Delicious

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Servings 12 sliders

Ingredients

  • 1 dozen Hawaiian Rolls or slider buns {I used King’s Savory Hawaiian Rolls}
  • 36-48 pepperoni slices
  • 1 1/2 cups Bolognese sauce or very thick meat sauce
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 T unsalted butter
  • garlic powder
  • salt and pepper
  • 2 T chopped parsley

Instructions

  • Divide rolls into 2 sections of 6 each. Half sections horizontally. Spread bottom halves with a thick layer of Bolognese sauce or thick marinara. Sprinkle with half of cheese.
  • Place pepperoni between paper towels and microwave for 20 seconds to render fat.
  • Divide slices between the 2 roll bottom sections, placing 3-4 slices of pepperoni on each individual roll bottom. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and replace top sections. Carefully cut out individual rolls along bakery lines. Place rolls close together in a foil lined baking pan.
  • Melt butter and season with salt, pepper and garlic powder to taste. Brush roll tops with butter and sprinkle with parsley. Cover and refrigerate until baking if desired.
  • Bake covered for 15 minutes, then uncover and bake another 15-20 minutes until heated through and golden.
  • Serve warm. Reheat leftover rolls for 20 seconds each in microwave

You can see my recipe for Bolognese Sauce here

HHjr made a batch of Pastor Ryan’s Bolognese here, but he used a mixture of ground beef, ground pork, and Italian sausage, instead of just ground beef as stated in the original recipe

Both recipes are delicious and freeze beautifully so stash some away for the hectic holidays!

Enjoy!
