Take-out Tuesday, Sheet Pan Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

A good grilled cheese sandwich is hard to beat,

and if you need multiple sandwiches,

baking them in the oven is the way to go!

I recently made a batch of grilled cheese sandwiches

for CC’s Birthday Party

Instead of grilling sandwiches in a skillet, 1 or 2 at a time,

I baked them on a baking sheet in the oven

It works for a simple basic grilled cheese or a gourmet version

The possibilities are endless…

Of course there’s the basic white bread, butter,

and American cheese or Cheddar cheese

But you can use any type of bread you like~

You can also use any cheese or combine several different cheeses

and add in meat, fruit, vegetables, condiments…

Have you ever tried spreading the bread

with mayonnaise instead of butter?

It adds a little flavor tang

Spread butter or mayonnaise on one side of each bread slice,

put cheese slice or slices on the plain side

and top with another bread slice butter side up

Place sandwiches on a baking sheet

Bake at 375-400 degrees for 5-10 minutes*

Turn sandwiches over and continue baking for 5-8 more minutes

*Important Note:

Time and temperature will depend on a variety of factors

1. your oven

2. type of bread

3. how crisp you want the sandwiches

4. what’s in the filling

I highly recommend making one or two

to determine the best time for your sandwiches

before making a sheet pan full

You can also put some cheese on the outside of the bread

for a tasty Parmesan crust

Drool worthy, right?

Here’s a handy list of sandwich possibilites

You can also bake the sandwiches in a toaster oven

or in an air fryer

Again I recommend experimenting with time and temperature

to see what formula is best for you

My air fryer has racks like an oven

so you don’t have to turn food over,

both sides cook at once

I cook a grilled cheese {2 slices white bread, 2 slices cheese}

at 350 degrees for 7 minutes

Have you ever had a grilled cheese on brioche bread?

Insanely good!

Soooo,

are you craving a warm melty grilled cheese sandwich yet?

Yes, I’m craving grill cheese now! I do make these in the oven, so much easier and just as yummy. You have great ideas for add-ons Jenna. Stay safe today with these storms moving in…..

Jenna, What a great idea to use a sheet pan for your grilled cheese crowd! We’re provolone fans for the melting factor but we have to bacon. 🙂

  4. Jenna, we love grilled cheese sandwiches and have been on a recent kick of having them often. I haven’t tried baking them on a sheet pan. I sometimes have a piece of cheese toast for breakfast. We love using brioche for our grilled cheese. Happy Tuesday and stay safe!

  5. Yes, I do indeed now crave a grilled cheese! I make mine with provolone and colby-jack. I’ve often made croutons from bread in the oven with olive oil, never thought about doing it with cheese for sandwiches.

  6. YUM! Our local bakery makes Cheese Bread and it makes the best Grilled Cheese sandwiches! I must try the brioche bread! Now I have a hankering for one!

  7. So many possibilities! You could have a different grilled cheese every day!

Jenna, I am so hungry this morning, and you are making me want a grilled cheese. My grandmother would use mayonnaise instead of butter and bake them in the oven as well. Brioche bread sounds yummy on a grilled cheese. I may have to try that. Happy Tuesday!

  9. Hi Jenna!….you have inspired me to make these sandwiches tonight for soup and sandwich night! I have always made them either in the grill pan or griddle on my stove, but never thought to bake them in the oven! Thanks for the great idea….Happy Spring Jenna!

When I saw the title, I said “What”?? That’s a great idea, and yes, definitely drool worthy. I’ll have to try this for a Friday Lenten meal for myself, but in my toaster oven!!

  11. That oozing out cheese just has me drool terribly! I need to get an airfryer oven too…a very practical kitchen gadget.

What great ideas, Jenna! My mouth was watering as I read your post this morning. I may never get my fry pan out again to make grilled cheese sandwiches after reading about the oven-made kind! So much easier—-especially for multiple orders! Thanks!

  13. Do you know anyone who doesn’t like grilled cheese? I don’t. (Know anyone, that is.) In fact, I was thinking of having it for lunch today. Sometimes I smush King’s Hawaiian slider buns (divide and butter the insides as the outside of the sandwich and smush down a bit for the cheese). The buns taste great! Love the outside parm idea.

  14. Julie says:

I would never think of making grilled cheese in the oven but it looks like it works when you are making a lot of them. Thanks Jenna for sharing how to make them in the oven.

  15. Oh my, parmesan crust… Sounds heavenly:@)

My chef (aka husband) is contemplating an air fryer. I actually saw directions recently on a package of frozen fries for how to cook them in an air fryer. I’d say that’s a sign that air fryers may be more than a fad.

    • We got one about 4-5 years ago and returned it because we weren’t impressed…I decided to try this newer version to see if there was improvement, and we love it! I especially like this style with the shelves rather than a basket so you don’t have to turn food over half way during cooking time.

  17. Nancy says:

Mmmmm! Mmmmmm! Air Fryers are the way to go. I will need to make grilled cheese sandwiches in ours! Thanks for the tip!

  18. Kim says:

Mmm Jenna – these look sooo good! You have elevated the basic grilled cheese sandwich to new levels! I always put several different cheeses on mine, but didn’t know about the mayonnaise or to try and cook them in the oven. Thanks for sharing and pinned of course!

  19. Brian says:

    How great and easy!

What a great post! I love the parm crust idea. Pinned and shared on facebook – Thanks for sharing at the What’s for Dinner party. Hope you have a great week!
