Fearless Friday, Blue Ribbon

I often copy other artist’s work when I am inspired by their style
The oil painting below by Karen Appleton
is part of a series of packages she’s painted
I just love her bold and fearless style
and the way she dramatizes the shadows with color

I used it for a model and painted it with watercolor in July
for World Watercolor Month
the prompt was “ribbon”
First a sketch in pencil~
when you’re drawing, don’t think about the subject,
rather concentrate on the different shapes you see
and where they are in relation to each other

Then I began by painting the dark areas with
Daniel Smith extra fine watercolor Neutral Tint

Next the lightest areas are painted with shades of yellow green

Next shades of blue

More color building

“Blue Ribbon” 6″ x 6″ watercolor on mixed media paper

I hope I’ve inspired you to try something new

I don’t know but it’s driving me crazy!

I don’t know

Hi Jenna, what a lovely painting you use as your inspiration and your watercolor is just a lovely. The colors are amazing and you have just the right amount of blending, you know your colors. Just beautiful!! Happy weekend……
Jenna, FYI, I left the comment above and it shows up as anonymous! This is the first time in a while my comments posted at all. Emily
I’m so sorry, it’s happening on other blogs too, don’t know what’s going on!
Jenna, FYI, The comment above posted as anonymous and is the first one that’s posted at all for several days. Emily ………
As usual, another beautiful piece of artwork . . . may we open the gift?!
Best weekend wishes,
Mary from ‘Awakening Wonders’ just in cast this comment shows as anonymous.
Thanks Mary, don’t know why that’s happening all of a sudden, sorry!
It looks simply beautiful, Jenna.
Thank you Angie!
Just lovely, your talent continues to amaze me.
Thank you Carole!
So good! I like your watercolor better than the original oil painting.
Thank you so much!
Jenna, this is beautiful and I agree with others that I like it better than the original. The blues are so pretty! Love the step by step process too – it almost makes me think I could try to paint. Almost lol. I left a comment earlier about Bluehost (and didn’t sign my name). Bluehost is the host my my WP and I received an email from them yesterday saying that they were migrating customers to a new data center between Aug 20 to 31 and there might be impacts to people’s sites. Maybe that’s the problem with all the anonymous comments; I can’t even access my website right now. If Bluehost is not your server than I’m not sure about what the problem might be but I thought I’d let you know. Kim from thecatswhiskerz.
Thanks so much Kim! I chatted with WordPress yesterday and they weren’t very helpful, so who knows what’s going on, the tech world is hard to keep up with! Thanks for letting me know. I hope you will try painting, another artist you might like has a ton of free art tutorials, look at https://thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com
I enjoy your tutorials. It’s always amazing to me the way a jumble of shapes and colors will turn into an accurate representation.
Thanks so much Lydia, much appreciated!
Jenna!!!!! Golly!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t know the first thing about drawing or painting, but I know what I like: THIS!!!!! Wow!!!!!!
Thank you Alycia! š
