Fearless Friday, Watercolor Cardinal
I barely picked up a paint brush over the holidays,
and it’s time to get back to daily art work
I often turn to Pinterest to get painting ideas
When I saw this painting by Wesley Karchut
my paint brush started calling my name
I thought a quick watercolor was exactly what I needed
to begin to get my grove back

I drew his profile with a pencil and once I was satisfied with it,
I lightly erased it so I could still see it for guidance,
but wouldn’t show through the paint
The beak was painted with a golden yellow

A few feathers in the same shade

Then I began to add his feathers with an orange red

And a deeper red

His eye was painted with a dark blue, leaving white highlights
This is what I consider the ugly stage
and I often get so involved at this point
I forget to take photos
And next thing I knew, he was finished!
I added the black around his eye and beak
and put a shadow on his beak with yellow ochre

“Cardinal” after Wesley Karchut, 6″x 7″ watercolor on mixed media paper

Have fun and
Be Fearless!

Beautiful Jenna! One of my favorite birds to watch at the feeders in the winter! Happy Friday ♥
I always feel like it’s a sign of good luck when I see one 🙂
Love this, Jenna!!❤️
Thanks Rita!
He’s very handsome, Jenna. I do love cardinals — especially in the winter snow when they really stand out! I love the freedom of his feathers!
Thanks Jeanie, happy painting!
Jenna, I love your cardinal. He is handsome. We love seeing them in winter. The male’s beautiful red plumage stands over the gray landscape!
Happy Friday stay warm. Tonight and tomorrow’s wind chill is brutal!
I love seeing them too, always feel that they bring good luck! I hate this weather and have been hibernating!
Beautiful!
Thank you Dorothy 🙂

Thanks so much Rosie, so nice to hear from. you!
I’m afraid of birds – but I think they are so pretty. This definitely looks like a friendly bird who is so beautiful he would never peck my eyes out. – Fun to paint feathers, too!
He was fun to paint!

Thank you Mary, he was fun to paint!
Amazing! The blaze of red is enhanced by the yellow. I’m not an artist and would never have thought to do that.
Thank you Linda!
How beautiful! I love the bright red with the yellow. I’m always in awe how easy you make it look.
Thank you so much Judee!
Oh my goodness Jenna – he is beautiful! I love that he looks a bit ruffled and you definitely have your groove back. They are such gorgeous looking birds. Our weather has been awful here too and I hope you are staying warm and cozy!
Thank you Kim! He was fun to paint and this definitely made me want to get back to drawing and painting more~ our weather is so awful I don’t want to leave my house!
I hope to see a REAL Cardinal one day… Yours is a beauty! I like how you just painted the upper body and head of the bird.
Thank you Jill, we do have cardinals, and I always feel it’s a sign of good luck when I see one.
