Tablescapes, Vegetable Garden Table
June is a beautiful month in the South, things are green and happy. You don’t want to see my backyard in August when all our blooms and plants are struggling from the long hot summer days~ so I want to invite you over now while things are at their best~
It’s still nice enough to dine outside some nights~
I could hardly wait to try out these gorgeous new plates I got for Mother’s Day. They are large, square dinner plates, one has a big bunch of radishes,
One with a bouquet of carrots,
One plate has fat red tomatoes
And this one fresh corn on the cob.
The centerpiece is 3 stalks of fresh corn, partially shucked so they look like they are starting to “bloom,”
They are tied with jute and a burlap “bow.”
The red napkins got the same treatment, they are tied with jute with a burlap accent
The round yellow pot is elevated by a green ceramic pedestal.
I wanted to keep the centerpiece simple to let the plates be the star of the show
1 large heirloom tomato, a fat red onion and another ear of corn dress the base of the centerpiece~
It is a simple tribute to the glory of fresh vegetables!
The hydrangeas are just starting to bloom, can you spy that little bloom just to the left of the centerpiece?
I can’t figure out our hydrangeas, they bloom so much later than all the other ones I see around here…
And they tease me too, there will be one giant gorgeous bloom hiding in the back and nowhere else~
They should be looking more like this right now
Here’s another strange thing happening in our yard, in a planter box on the wall we noticed a plant emerging amidst the begonias. It didn’t look like a weed, and we were curious so we decided to let it grow…when it began to flower we realized it was a zucchini plant! We have no idea how it got there, it seemed to be attached to the root of one of the bedding plants that was originally there~as I often profess, we are NOT gardeners, we just hope for the best, so we never know what’s going to happen and Mother Nature is full of surprises!

The half-shucked corn for a centerpiece was a brilliant idea. Very clever!
I’m wondering if your hydrangea plant is getting enough sun where it is planted? I know that can make a difference. Did you know you can change the color of the blooms by additives to the soil? They can range from white-ish pale pink to purple to deep blue. Google it!
Thanks Rett, I did know about the color thing, they get maybe 5 hours of hot bright sun, is that not enough? The leaves always get very droopy every afternoon, but I know they get plenty of water. I sure appreciate you taking the time to mention these things to me, thanks! Jenna
Mother Nature IS full of surprises, and so are YOU!!! What a neat tablescape, Jenna! Your centerpiece is SUPER creative, especially the way you leaned toward “partial nudity” with the corn stalks! 🙂 Your Mother’s Day gift of fabulous plates will be enjoyed for years to come, and their inaugural visit to Blog Land is pretty spectacular. They look great against the rattan chargers.
I hope that Mother Nature somehow surprises you once again by keeping the temps low enough for you to be able to eat outside a lot this summer. It seems such a shame to have such a pretty back yard and not be able to enjoy it!

What a fun table! Your idea to use the corn in the vase if very clever. I’m going to try to copy that one. Corn is my favorite summer veggie too. I have wonderful childhood memories of eating fresh picked corn on the cob. Thanks for sharing your lovely garden space as well as this delightful table.

I love the corn centerpiece. You are so creative with your tablescapes! How funny about your surprise plant. We have something growing in the compost – squash or zucchini, not sure which yet. I don’t have the heart to chop it up, but I doubt it’ll produce much without good pollination. Thanks for sharing your wonderful veggie-licious table! 🙂

Such a beautiful table! and I am sorry about your hydrangeas, mine do the same thing so I don’t have any answers for you. But the zucchini plant, I am curious if a bird could have visited your planter box and left or dropped a seed that bloomed in your planter box? I am always finding plants in my yard too that I never planted, I often think its bird or squirrels dropping things.

Jenna, thanks so much for linking this post, otherwise I would have missed this stunning Tablescape from your archives! The plates are definitely the star and I love that there are four different vegetables featured. But, I also think the centerpiece is pretty amazing and of course, creative. I would definitely say that corn is my favorite vegetable prepared “creamed” or on the cob! I am so glad you joined the Gardens Galore Party and there will be more coming! I still think you should share some floral paintings!
