A Special Day and a Giveaway!

I want to share something with you today that is both sad and happy~

let’s do the happy part first~ August 1 is my “Blogaversary.” I started the Painted Apron August 1, 2012.  I started it because I wanted to push myself to be more creative, being creative makes me happy… it gives me energy and strength…

Now for the sad part…August 1 is also the anniversary of my youngest son’s death.  He was 18 years old, 2 weeks from going away to the College of Charleston, with a full scholarship in the Honors program. He was smart, funny, loving and charming. He was a talented artist, a scholar and a musician.

I couldn’t breathe for a month.  It was a massive struggle to go anywhere for a year.  I cried everyday for three years.

I know, sorry, I do not want to make you cry, I promise this is going to get happy again…

August 1 was such a dreaded day that I would get physically sick weeks before it’s arrival.

After 5 years I decided I could not live like that anymore.   I decided to stop crying, be thankful for his short life, and get on with my own.

After 8 years I decided to turn August 1 from a dreaded day to a celebratory day and I started blogging.

New Year's Eve thepaintedapron.com

I had been writing recipes for a collection dedicated to my children that I called the Painted Apron.  I decided this would be the perfect title for my blog and a way to keep a virtual log of recipes and ideas for them,

All of them.

I share this with you today because often in my writing, this significant part of my life feels like a stumbling block and something I am hiding.

It isn’t something I want to hide, we have all suffered great losses, and have to continue.  I have been blessed with courage and strength, from my family and friends, to be able to celebrate today.

It has been 10 years now, and a long healing process……I will always remember August 1, but now I remember it with love and faith, gratitude and possibilities…

Blogging has become a way for me to give back, to play it forward if you will, and share things I discover that I think others might enjoy or benefit from…

To celebrate my Blogaversary today, I would like to do a giveaway from my handpainted glassware collection JMdesigns

I have painted everything from apples to zebras and lots of things in between…

    Hi Jenna,
I’m a new to Painted Apron and have so enjoyed learning so much from you.
I too have two homes, one which is at the beach also, so sometimes I feel like you are writing just for me.
You not only are a talented woman, but very strong also.
I just love everything how you combine your table decor with your menu.
I would love to see a few more DIY.
I would love Tom Turkey wine glass.
    Thanks
    Pat

  2. Hi Jenna – There are no words. I had no idea and I am truly sorry for your loss and think you are wonderful for taking the pain and turning it into healing. It’s how I started blogging as well… different circumstance but same process.

    1. I love your creativity. This is one area that I need to grow in, and seeing everything you do gives me that gentle nudge (push) to step out of my comfort zone and try new things.

    2. More of the same!

    3. Angel. Considering the circumstances, I would keep it for a prize/give-away for my annual BC fundraiser in February and pay the kindness forward.

Blessings to you and your family and extra big hugs today.
    Holly

    • Thank you so much Holly, I have always had great admiration for you since I read your story and it is truly wonderful how you go all out to support others. It would be my pleasure to donate a set of Angels for your February fundraiser, so consider it done~ thank you so much for the kind words and it delights my heart that I inspire you!

  3. Mary says:

Oh Jenna, I am so sorry and saddened to hear about your youngest son. I would have never guessed from your sunny and cheery posts that you had experienced something so devastating and heart-wrenching. I’m glad you have been able to move on again and make peace. Your creativity and energy always brings a smile to my face and am GLAD you started blogging! I’ll take myself out of the running since I already have an ADORABLE hand painted creation from you. I hope whoever is the lucky winner enjoys your talent and hand painted glassware as much as I plan on doing 🙂

  4. Lisa Cooper says:

I enjoy the fact that you are REAL! Talking about the death of your son, reliving the grief is hard, but REAL! I lost my husband 7 years ago due to surgical complications from hip surgery. This left me with a 10 year old son to raise on my own. I didn’t know if I could, but I have! My son is now entering his senior year in high school and has already been contacted by colleges with offers of academic and athletic scholarships! We can do what we put our minds to!

    • Thank you Lisa, I am so sorry to hear what you have experienced, congratulations on how you have been able to go forward and your son’s achievements. I really appreciate your comments and all the feedback, thank you so much for visiting~

  5. Lisa Cooper says:

I’d love to see my DIY and craft tutorials.

  6. Lisa Cooper says:

I love the tall beverage Santas.

  7. Jenna, I had no idea. You are such a kind, creative, sweet soul, and you share great food and beautiful things with us all here on the blog that no one would ever have guessed that you had experienced such sadness. I grew up with parents who lost their first born in a tragedy, and I know first-hand that losing a child is probably about the worst thing that can happen to people. You have done the right thing, finding an outlet to make something beautiful from something so painful.

I like everything you paint, especially that painting of the houses. The Santas are just so happy — i guess that would have to be a favorite.

I am sending you an email, too.

  8. I am new to your blog, Jenna, and find today’s post full of determination to press ahead even with such profound grief. Your courage is an inspiration.

  9. My heart is with you, Jenna!

I love your spirit and wonderful ideas. That’s why I visit The Painted Apron.
The Painted Apron is so beautifully put together, I can’t think of a single thing to add!
The Santas are my favorite and of course, the wine glass would be my choice.:-)

  10. Debbie says:

Your story is so inspirational. It gives hope to those who may face similar circumstances. I so enjoy your recipes and creativity! My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving and I love to serve wine. Have a blessed day!

  11. Kathy R says:

I have been reading your blog for about six months. I especially enjoy the fact that at least part of the time, you live at my favorite place, Gulf Shores/Orange Beach. I love to read about your beach house and see pictures of your creations. Thank you for sharing your story with us. In honor of my mother who loved decorating her carport for Halloween and seeing all the costumed children who came to see “the witch” , I would like the Wendi Witch goblets.

  12. Deborah Koegel says:

    Susan,

First and foremost God Bless You today and always. I was thinking that if I am receiving today’s post…maybe I am receiving the post’s after all. I am not the most computer literate but I will try the links you sent to me if you still think it is necessary.

    Thanks, Deb.

  13. Karen says:

Hi Jenna, Love seeing your posts in my morning e-mails. Today’s was special in that my family lost my older brother at a similar age. I enjoy your creativity and enthusiasm in the foods that you make. Take-out Tuesday is a fav of mine. I’d love to see posts of your painting of dishware. I woud choose the Wendi Witch stemware to add to my Halloween decor. Thanks for sharing and Happy Blog Anniversary! ~Karen

    • Thank you Karen, I am so sorry about your brother…it is as hard on siblings as it is for parents…thank you for your feedback, and I will be doing more painting tutorials as that has been the most requested. Wendi Witch has long been one of my most popular designs!

  14. Tracey H says:

Bless you on this day. It’s good that you have found a way to express yourself and maybe help your grief in some way.

  15. Sharon Calvert says:

Jenna, thank you for sharing your heart and allowing your readers to join in your celebration of life and love and happy moments. In August 2012 my husband and I relocated north of Gulf Shores/Orange Beach to be nearer our little family, so I’m especially drawn to your posts about all things ‘beachy.’ Club Meon looks amazing and welcoming; I wish you many years of continued joy and contentment there in the sunshine and salty air. Your giveaway is delightful, and I can just envision my grandkids sipping their cranapple juice from Tom Turkey tall beverage glasses and novelty pumpkin-embellished straws!

    • Thank you Sharon, it is nice to “meet” a beach neighbor! Thanks also for the sweet comments and you have given me a great idea~I need to paint some Tom Turkeys for my grands this year! I hope you win some for yours!

  16. Pat Feamster says:

So very, very sorry for your loss. You are a very strong & talented woman. I’m sure your Son would be so very proud of the way you have chosen to honor him. God bless you, Jenna. If I should be lucky enough to win your contest, I would love to have the Wendi Witch goblets.

  17. I love the bright and happy colors. I am not a cook but enjoy reading your many recipes. Your artwork is so lively. Love your creativeness. You cheer me up especially on a low day. I am a “Christmas Baby” and love the angels. Though Santa is awfully cute. May you continue to be blessed with happiness and joy. Jenna, thank you for your inspiration.

  18. Liz Mackie says:

First of all, I am so very sorry for the tragic death of your talented son. Just not fair these things happen to good people. Congratulations on your anniversary. I enjoy your blog very much. Have a relaxing weekend!

  19. Mary says:

When I saw your blog listed on a quilter’s blog, the name spoke to me. I love bright colors as they seem to be full of life and represent optimism. Sometimes when I’m just putting one foot in front of the other, my eyes open to color – I see all the greens. Our world is brighter when all of the colors sparkle in their own way.

I would like to see painting on fabric or some quilting patterns or designs used in your creations. If I win a set of glasses, I’d like the angels. I believe each of us has at least one guardian angel who is with us at all times.

Thank you for sharing with us. Many warm wishes on your blog’s anniversary and for the memories of your son.

  20. Jenna, I would have never guessed you had been through such a terrible tragedy because your comments to everyone are always so witty, charming, cheerful and encouraging. Your posts are very creative and how you manage to post so often and keep up with visiting everyone is amazing. I have two friends that have lost a young adult child. They have suffered greatly too.Your story is inspiring and I hope to share it with them. I appreciate your sharing this with all of us that did not know about your loss. It took courage but will bear fruit to inspire others. You have so many gifts and writing is one of them.
I like everything about The Painted Apron and wouldn’t change a thing. All of your creative hand painted glasses are delightful but I would chose the angel goblet.
Thank you for sharing your heart with us. Love, Bonnie

    • Thank you Bonnie, and I had to smile when I saw your choice, of course you would choose Angel because you are so kind and caring, and always see the joy and good in others~your words are very special to me and I am so glad we got to meet recently…

  21. Kim says:

Jenna, thank you for sharing what has to be the most devastating event in your life! My heart is breaking for you. (Don’t feel bad for making us cry. It’s cleansing and therapeutic.) The better news is that you have survived your loss and turned it into something positive to focus your time, thoughts, and creativity. Since I only discovered you soon after starting my blog, I thought you’d been blogging several years by then! That was about February, 2013, that I found you. I like making your recipes, but my absolute favorite thing is seeing your artwork! I specifically enjoy your posts where you show, step-by-step, stroke-by-stroke, your process of painting a picture or design. You know how I lack in this area! Seeing how you do things gives me confidence to try my unsteady hand at something similar. I would love to see more of those painting tutorials, but I also love all your creative projects. I would have to choose the Santa beverage glasses – in hopes of having grandchildren someday to serve something special for them at Christmas! Happy Blogaversary, and I’m so happy and blessed to have you as a blogging friend! (I still wish we could all get together for a weekend meet-and-greet. That would include these other wonderful bloggers commenting here.)

    • Thanks so much Kim, I was so disappointed I couldn’t meet you recently in Fairhope, I know we will get to meet one day soon~I really appreciate your kind words today and the other days~I will do some more painting tutorials, thanks for the feedback! It is fun to see the design choices of the bloggers I know, I could almost predict you would choose the Santa! I love reading your upbeat blog and you inspire me too~

  22. Jenna!
Please allow me to say how sorry I am for the loss of your son. You’ve turned an incomprehensible loss into something celebratory and lovely – and I am so glad that you did!

We started our blogs on exactly the same day two years ago, so Happy Blogoversary to you! I would love goblets of Turkey Tom. You are a very gifted painter, m’dear. Do you sell your work anywhere?

Cheers to you, your son and your wonderful blog! XOXO

  23. fairhopesupplyco says:

Jenna, I have a son who is 18 and a few weeks away from college, so this hit me hard. I know where you were in your life when this happened . . . full of hope and thinking of the future. To slam on brakes like that and be shoved into a state of mourning must have been beyond anything I could ever imagine. I’m so sorry, yet so proud of you too, for coming full circle and now being able to speak about this and share your story. You never, ever, EVER know who will read this and who it will help.
As for your blog, I started my blog only a month before you, so we are almost twins! I love your vignettes and accessories, and also the great ideas (why didn’t I think of that!) for new twists on food.
Bless you for many more years of creativity ahead!

    • Oh Leslie Anne, this must have been a punch in the gut for you, I am sooo sorry~I really thought long and hard about posting this because I didn’t want to upset anyone~I really appreciate your kind words and I do hope this will help others. I am happy to have you as a blog twin, and your posts always always make me laugh!

      • fairhopesupplyco says:

Not upset at all. You made me cherish my lanky boy even more. What a gift! Thank you so much for being brave and sharing.

  24. Carol Bjorklund says:

    Hi Jenna
As you know, I have so enjoyed your web site-always trying new recipes and talking about them with Sally. I love your creativity and how you put things together in such a simple way-using whatever you have on hand. I would enjoy having several simple recipes for a casual dinner party-from start to finish. And I love the “angel” goblet. So thankful that you have chosen to use your talents and this day in such a positive way. Thank you Jenna for sharing!

    • Thank you Carol! AND what a GREAT idea about a start to finish dinner party! My mind is literally racing with ideas! It is so special to me that one of my sisters best friends visits the Painted Apron~

  25. Out of the heart, the mouth speaks and we have heard your heart. Your story is so moving and as Bonnie and others have said, it is sure to inspire many. I haven’t lost a child, but have experienced heartache. The sadness is palpable and at times, seems insurmountable, so I pray that this time of sharing brings healing. May your happy memories bring you comfort and your blog bless you with many new friends and inspiration. I am blessed to call you a new friend and continually inspired by your creativity. Many hugs from Fairhope.

Everyday I am inspired by your blogs that are so creative and fun for me to read. Today this blog is very special and so touching with your feelings and memories of your precious son who will always be with you constantly. You and your family are very strong people whom I love lots!
Keep the wonderful ideas and recipes coming daily. I never miss reading them
I love the angel who is always watching over us and guiding our paths.
Thank you , Jenna, for sharing this message with us today.

  28. Rosie says:

Hi, Jenna: I applaud your grace and strength and ability to get to the other side of such a tragedy; you are an inspiration. The best part of your blog is the clarity with which you explain your yummy recipes through clear pictures and directions. I hadn’t collected recipes for a very long time, and now find myself with quite a collection from your blog alone! Many thanks. I would keep your blog just as it is: I look forward to seeing your posts in my email.Thank you for the opportunity to enter the giveaway! I would like a tall beverage class with a witch! . And, congratulations on your Blogaversary!!!! Take care, Rosie @ The Magic Hutch

  29. Sally Clem says:

Jenna, you know how challenged I am in the creative department, but your blogs have inspired me to step out of my dingy world and try some of your refreshing ideas. And I’ve enjoyed trying several of your recipes. I just need HH or HHjr to come cook on the grill for me! I look forward to your blog every day. I would enjoy seeing more pictures of our precious Charlotte! 🙂 The Santa tall beverage glasses would be fun!

    • hahahaha! You KNOW I would put CC in every post if I didn’t think her mama would kill me! I was so thankful to have her with me yesterday, that little girl always has a big smile on her sweet face! I am thrilled I have inspired you and so appreciate your support. Thank you also for keeping Big Ben when CC comes to the beach 🙂

  30. I want you to know that I feel deeply for you on both counts: the happy and the sad. I am glad that you have been able to find joy in that date. I know it has to have been very difficult at best. I’m sure that all of your love and feelings your son translate into your beautiful creations, especially this time of year.

I think what I like most about your blog is that you and I often think with the same brain, and I can relate so easily to much of what you present. I don’t have a fabulous beach place like you do (don’t I wish!!!), but we somehow end up creating tablescapes with some of the same themes or elements just the same. We both have a butler from the same lineage ( 😉 ), and through them we are forever connected! As for the glasses, I think I would most like the…………….Santa. No, the witches. No, wait……..the Santas. Dang! Too hard to pick. OK…the Santas. That’s my final answer. 🙂

Congratulations on your 2-year blogaversary, and I wish you great peace as you continue to honor, remember and love.

    • I know we are soul mates Alycia, James and Geoffry went to butler school together! I always smile when we are often on the same wave length on our posts, and am proud to be in not only your circle of blogging friends, but that we are often of the same ideas and philosophy~ you have been such a source of support and help to me, and I value our blogging friendship so much! If you win you can have Santas and Witches!
      Jenna

I just came across the Painted Apron and can’t find just one aspect I love about it…I love EVERYTHING! Jenna, you cover design, inspiration, color, recipes, etc. and haven’t left any stone unturned.

If I were lucky enough to win a set of your hand painted glasses, I would choose the wine goblets with Wendi Witch since my birthday is in the fall. Each design is so adorable!

Thank you for sharing your personal talents and stories. I feel as though we know each other and believe we would be good friends.

Take care and thank you for bringing many smiles to my face.

    Appreciate it!

  45. Maxine says:

Jenna, I am so sorry for your loss! They say you will never get over losing a child. My sister passed unexpectantly in Aug. 2005. My mom’s heart broke and she was such a strong woman coming from a very rough life since birth. But your story has given me a new inspiration! You will be in my prayers! I love your paintings especially the “Island Art”! Beautiful! I would be honored to have any of your artwork so I would let you choose! Thank you for sharing your story and words of wisdom!

  46. Marie says:

Blessed morning. I, too, discovered your site through the Home is Where the Potting Shed Is post. I felt that a kindred spirit was found as soon as I read, “being creative makes me happy….it gives me energy and strength”. You have perfectly summed up my own creative feelings.

I then went on to read about your precious son and as a mother myself, felt the pain in your words; and so admired the strength and courage that you have chosen to find. You touched my heart and reminded me that I must daily look for the blessings in my own life. Thank you.

I love all the glass sets that you included, but I think I would pick the Thanksgiving set because in all the holiday items I have there are no Thanksgiving glasses.

    Thank you, Marie

  47. Amy Kaminski says:

This is the first time reading your blog. I am so touched by your story and feel honored to be able to read and know something so deeply personal. With that, and following along to what all the others have said I’m going to keep following you. We sound like kindred spirits. I’m a holiday lover and think those Santa’s are adorable and I would cherish a set. I’ll look forward to reading your blog!

Just found your blog by following the trail from Home is Where the Boat is. Love everything that you do, added you to my list of blogs that I follow. Please give the gift to one of your loyal followers, I’m just glad to add you to my list. My brother’s birthday is August 1st. He just made another birthday in spite of a terminal cancer diagnosis and six months to live – that was two years ago. I think we just take each day the best we can and find the wonder and beauty in that day. Peace and love to you and your family.
