A Special Day and a Giveaway!
I want to share something with you today that is both sad and happy~
let’s do the happy part first~ August 1 is my “Blogaversary.” I started the Painted Apron August 1, 2012. I started it because I wanted to push myself to be more creative, being creative makes me happy… it gives me energy and strength…
Now for the sad part…August 1 is also the anniversary of my youngest son’s death. He was 18 years old, 2 weeks from going away to the College of Charleston, with a full scholarship in the Honors program. He was smart, funny, loving and charming. He was a talented artist, a scholar and a musician.
I couldn’t breathe for a month. It was a massive struggle to go anywhere for a year. I cried everyday for three years.
I know, sorry, I do not want to make you cry, I promise this is going to get happy again…
August 1 was such a dreaded day that I would get physically sick weeks before it’s arrival.
After 5 years I decided I could not live like that anymore. I decided to stop crying, be thankful for his short life, and get on with my own.
After 8 years I decided to turn August 1 from a dreaded day to a celebratory day and I started blogging.
I had been writing recipes for a collection dedicated to my children that I called the Painted Apron. I decided this would be the perfect title for my blog and a way to keep a virtual log of recipes and ideas for them,
All of them.
I share this with you today because often in my writing, this significant part of my life feels like a stumbling block and something I am hiding.
It isn’t something I want to hide, we have all suffered great losses, and have to continue. I have been blessed with courage and strength, from my family and friends, to be able to celebrate today.
It has been 10 years now, and a long healing process……I will always remember August 1, but now I remember it with love and faith, gratitude and possibilities…
Blogging has become a way for me to give back, to play it forward if you will, and share things I discover that I think others might enjoy or benefit from…
To celebrate my Blogaversary today, I would like to do a giveaway from my handpainted glassware collection JMdesigns
I have painted everything from apples to zebras and lots of things in between…
So since the holidays are coming up so I want to giveaway a set of 4 glasses with your choice ofHalloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas!
Wendi Witch is a happy witch, she has put her broom down and wears striped tights and silver stars~
Tom Turkey is very grateful, the back of the glass says, “Thanks!”
The white and gold Angel is so pretty during the holidays, but also appropriate on any day to make you feel watched over
Of course, Jolly Santa is always a pleasure to have around!
You can choose either glass style too, the all purpose goblet, which is great for any wine, water or beverage, or the tall beverage glass
This is not a complicated giveaway, you don’t have to sign up for anything, visit facebook or jump through hoops…

I too have two homes, one which is at the beach also, so sometimes I feel like you are writing just for me.
You not only are a talented woman, but very strong also.

Hi Jenna – There are no words. I had no idea and I am truly sorry for your loss and think you are wonderful for taking the pain and turning it into healing. It’s how I started blogging as well… different circumstance but same process.
1. I love your creativity. This is one area that I need to grow in, and seeing everything you do gives me that gentle nudge (push) to step out of my comfort zone and try new things.

Oh Jenna, I am so sorry and saddened to hear about your youngest son. I would have never guessed from your sunny and cheery posts that you had experienced something so devastating and heart-wrenching. I’m glad you have been able to move on again and make peace. I enjoy the fact that you are REAL! Talking about the death of your son, reliving the grief is hard, but REAL! I lost my husband 7 years ago due to surgical complications from hip surgery. This left me with a 10 year old son to raise on my own. I didn’t know if I could, but I have! My son is now entering his senior year in high school and has already been contacted by colleges with offers of academic and athletic scholarships! We can do what we put our minds to!

Jenna, I had no idea. You are such a kind, creative, sweet soul, and you share great food and beautiful things with us all here on the blog that no one would ever have guessed that you had experienced such sadness. I grew up with parents who lost their first born in a tragedy, and I know first-hand that losing a child is probably about the worst thing that can happen to people. You have done the right thing, finding an outlet to make something beautiful from something so painful.
I like everything you paint, especially that painting of the houses. The Santas are just so happy — i guess that would have to be a favorite.

I have been reading your blog for about six months. I especially enjoy the fact that at least part of the time, you live at my favorite place, Gulf Shores/Orange Beach. I love to read about your beach house and see pictures of your creations. Thank you for sharing your story with us. When I saw your blog listed on a quilter’s blog, the name spoke to me. I love bright colors as they seem to be full of life and represent optimism. Sometimes when I’m just putting one foot in front of the other, my eyes open to color – I see all the greens. Our world is brighter when all of the colors sparkle in their own way.
I would like to see painting on fabric or some quilting patterns or designs used in your creations. If I win a set of glasses, I’d like the angels. I believe each of us has at least one guardian angel who is with us at all times.

Jenna, thank you for sharing what has to be the most devastating event in your life! My heart is breaking for you. (Don’t feel bad for making us cry. It’s cleansing and therapeutic.) The better news is that you have survived your loss and turned it into something positive to focus your time, thoughts, and creativity. Since I only discovered you soon after starting my blog, I thought you’d been blogging several years by then! That was about February, 2013, that I found you. I like making your recipes, but my absolute favorite thing is seeing your artwork! I specifically enjoy your posts where you show, step-by-step, stroke-by-stroke, your process of painting a picture or design. You know how I lack in this area! Seeing how you do things gives me confidence to try my unsteady hand at something similar. I would love to see more of those painting tutorials, but I also love all your creative projects. I would have to choose the Santa beverage glasses – in hopes of having grandchildren someday to serve something special for them at Christmas! I used to be in local Alabama gift stores but after years of working 7 days a week, it was burning me out. I cut way back so I could travel more and do other things. Jenna, I have a son who is 18 and a few weeks away from college, so this hit me hard. I know where you were in your life when this happened . . . full of hope and thinking of the future. To slam on brakes like that and be shoved into a state of mourning must have been beyond anything I could ever imagine. I’m so sorry, yet so proud of you too, for coming full circle and now being able to speak about this and share your story. You never, ever, EVER know who will read this and who it will help.
As for your blog, I started my blog only a month before you, so we are almost twins! I love your vignettes and accessories, and also the great ideas (why didn’t I think of that!) for new twists on food.

I want you to know that I feel deeply for you on both counts: the happy and the sad. I am glad that you have been able to find joy in that date. I know it has to have been very difficult at best. I’m sure that all of your love and feelings your son translate into your beautiful creations, especially this time of year.
I think what I like most about your blog is that you and I often think with the same brain, and I can relate so easily to much of what you present. I don’t have a fabulous beach place like you do (don’t I wish!!!), but we somehow end up creating tablescapes with some of the same themes or elements just the same. We both have a butler from the same lineage ( 😉 ), and through them we are forever connected! As for the glasses, I think I would most like the…………….Santa. No, the witches. No, wait……..the Santas. Dang! Too hard to pick. OK…the Santas. That’s my final answer. 🙂

Just happened upon your blog today(do you believe in just happened…was lead)really enjoyed and will surely return. Truly sorry for your loss ….my daughter in love’s mother entered heaven’s gate Thursday after a battle with cancer.That is also my DIL birthday she in her sadness said now I will celebrate my bday and mother’s heavenly bday.

I like the way you put things in perspective and are like one of us. I always like to see recipes, crafts, and the glassware. Speaking of glassware, goblets and Tom Turkey(will complement my Publix pilgrims) are my pick. As a long time ED RN, I will always be there for our families who have a loss. It is a journey of healing and being able to celebrate the time you were given.

Jenna, I am so sorry for your loss! They say you will never get over losing a child. My sister passed unexpectantly in Aug. 2005. My mom’s heart broke and she was such a strong woman coming from a very rough life since birth. But your story has given me a new inspiration! You will be in my prayers! He just made another birthday in spite of a terminal cancer diagnosis and six months to live – that was two years ago.
