Recipe Box, Pajama Day Cookies

When I first moved to the South as a new bride, one of my first friends was a true Southern Belle…
She had a maid, a nanny, and a regular case of the “vapahs”… photo source
“Jenna honey,” she said, to become a Southerner, there are 3 things you’ve got to learn and you will get along just peachy
“Numbah one,” she said, “When you’ve been shoppin’ or playin’ tennis all day, be sure to fry up some bacon as soon as you walk in that dawha, so everyone will be thinkin’ you’ve been up in the kitchen cookin’ all day!”
“Numbah two,” she said, “I shutter to think that you don’t make your own mayonnaise, so use only Duke’s! There is simply NO other mayonnaise acceptable, PERIOD!”
“Numbah three,” she said, ” You must have a gown day once a week”
Huh? “What’s a gown day?”
Jeeeennnnnaaaaa, sugah, that’s a day you spend in your gown, you know, your négligée, tryin’ on clothes, and restin’, catchin’ up on feminine stuff…you know…”
No, I didn’t! I had two part time jobs, because I couldn’t get a decent job in my field, while my husband was finishing dental school…
In fond memory of those first years in Alabama, my husband and I had a “pajama day” this week. The family left after a pretty stressful fun filled, busy Memorial Day weekend, and we were, well exhausted…
Baby Boy made his first trip and he was a little trooper, but at 6 weeks old, there was lots of action. We also had a active 2, 3 and 7 year old, so things were non-stop to say the least
The day they left it was raining, and a perfect day to sit on the couch, watch a marathon of the French Open Tennis tournament, and nosh on fresh Raspberry topped Chocolate Chip Cookies…yep, in our pajamas…
Now, someday soon I am going to make the real deal, as per Jodi’s recipe here, but, “for a pig in a poke,” [sorry Earl] these hit the spot!
Bake cookies about half way until they start to spread
Push in some raspberries and continue baking
Please pop over and visit Jodi at Life in Between for her made from scratch cookie recipe~ you will love her photos, watercolors and creativity!
I hope y’all have a pajama day real soon, ya hear!

What a fun Southern Belle post. Love it Jenna Love rainy jammy days. Great twist on the cookies! Thanks for the shout out and happy Friday !!
Thanks for the inspiration Jodi!
Too funny, I do have to admit to the bacon trick myself, only it was onions and peppers… Oh and, Earl says as long as no actual pigs were poked all is good:@)
ha! onions and peppers works too 🙂
I so love this post Jenna…and your friend is very wise!!!…I am going to make those cookies as not only are they easy (love easy) but I love the combination of chocolate and raspberries!!! Have a great weekend!
thanks Shirley, I never would have thought to combine fresh raspberries with chocolate chip cookies, but it is a dreamy combo!
I am a Southern woman, and have never dropped the r on any word, honey and sugar are not in my vocabulary. This must have been eons ago, I live in Charlotte, and our speech is not very different from anyone else. We are not in the Gone with the Wind era. This stereotyping is not a good thing, can’t we be treated as equals?
Yes, Janet, it was a long time ago, and I wasn’t trying to stereotype, it was just one woman and it was all in good fun~ sorry if I offended you. When I first moved to the South, it was very much like this in Alabama, but yes times have changed, and women are treated like equals. >
A good morning chuckle to go with my coffee this morning Jenna. Love this very southern fun post and photos. Great idea to get healthy fruit into those cookies all the little ones enjoy. I try this for Connor.
Happy weekend
thanks Emily! I wouldn’t say they are exactly healthy, but the raspberry chocolate combo is pretty dreamy~
We had our 5 gkids here for the weekend so I hear you. Cooked myself silly! Then the sheets and towels when they left! I could never be a southern belle. I always worked and I haven’t been on a vacation in 25 yrs. My dh thinks that since we live in a resort community year round it counts as a vaca. NOT!
Ha! I feel your pain Kathleen! However, I do have everyone pretty well trained and they change their sheets and clean their bathrooms before they leave, and the guys clean up everything outside and wash the boat…it definitely takes everyone pitching in! The kids said this weekend that we need to add on and make the house bigger and my husband and I just secretly laughed and said the house is just perfect for 2!! 🙂 Enjoy your summer and put your guests to work! >
Honey, you have become one of us I do believe. I think it depends on what part of the South you come from, but down here in the Deep South, you do still hear the vernacular. I don’t know about having a “gown day” any more — most women are too busy, except for times when you absolutely must crash from exhaustion. I myself have had a couple of days like this while we have been working on the floor project.
I can’t imagine you ever taking a “gown” day Ellen, you always have too many projects going on! Your floor would have done me in for a month!
Lady, I just smiled all the way through this post! I want to meet your first Southern Belle friend. She sounds like fun!
I know how tired you must have been when the family left to go back home…that’s how I am after family gatherings at my house. And I have spent many days trying to recover just wearing my nightgown all day long. Thank goodness for the locked gate at the end of my driveway! It helps me relax and be comfy when I know nobody can sneak in to get a glimpse. I do lock the doors though, just in case…
Judy
Ha! I need a gate!!
This was such a nice post about being a southern bell! I love those grilled peaches. Chocolate chip cookies are the best! Enjoy the weekend.
thanks Julie! >
A gown day! I am in love!! That was so cute. Those cookies are amazing – need a raspberry in every bite!
Jenna, I’m Southern but never was a Belle 🙂 We need a pajama day or two after Memorial Day with my sister and her boys. It was fun but we’re still recovering from all the activity. The cookies sound delicious!
