I really enjoyed my Mother’s Day bouquet
I decided to try to capture it with watercolors
One of my favorite ways to study a photo for painting is to use the Waterlogue app
It does the painting for you!
You can print this out or take it to a professional to print and/or have it enlarged for framing
I like to use Waterlogue as reference to help me break down the shapes, tones and colors in complicated arrangements
When I painted this, I simplified the shapes and omitted many details, and set the focus on the two forward roses by adding the most details to them
I love the way this ribbed vase distorts the stems
I merely suggested this in my painting with vertical shapes and lines
You can also pay with your photo in Picmonkey or any photo editor. The photo below was created with the posterize effect, which simplifies the shapes and dramatically defines the shadow tones
Here is the bouquet “painted” with watercolors in Photoshop, again, this effect simplifies the shapes and defines the shadow tones
I love the way the shadows in the glass stand out in this one, and the strong contrasts between the lightest lights and darkest darks…
So, even if you aren’t comfortable with a brush, you can still paint in other ways!

I really loved seeing the process of painting the gorgeous bouquet from the waterlogue app Jenna. The detail of the stems seen through the ribbed vase was my favorite. Such a cool app!

A beautiful Mother’s Day bouquet Jenna. I love the watercolor applications too, and have fun with them. I made pics of my bouquet so I think I will do this too.

Jenna, I love all your “watercolor” versions of your beautiful bouquet, especially the one you actually painted! While we can all tap on those apps it takes a real artist like you to analyze the elements and then know how to create such a painting. Love it! Linda

I love that your artist’s eye caught the detail of the ribbed vase. So beautiful! Did you happen to see the watercolor show at the Eastern Shore Art Center when you were in Fairhope? It will be up for a few more weeks. Just amazing.

Gorgeous Jenna! You captured your Mother’s Day bouquet beautifully with your watercolor rendering! I think what I love the most about watercolors is the impressionistic quality and how just a wash of color can convey a feeling or tell a story. Enjoy your weekend!

I’m working on my watercolor technique (with varying degrees of success) and find any hints welcome! You’re right about the simplifying. The photo altering techniques do take some of the clutter out and help you get a better start. I love your painting — it’s beautiful (and I think prettier than all the other renditions!)
Thank you Jeanie, I think watercolor intimidates me because you can’t just paint over mistakes like you can with acrylic! I love the easy clean up though and am trying to do a lot of experimenting. Happy painting!
