Recipe Box, Random Wednesday

Here’s a few totally random things you might want to keep in the back of your mind
Fix those Scratched Plates with Bartender’s Friend
It’s easy to make your own Olive Oil Spray
Baking Soda will unclog drains
To get your drain running again (without resorting to chemicals worthy of a hazmat suit) pour ½ cup baking soda, then ½ cup vinegar, down a clogged drain. Cover it with a wet cloth, wait 5 minutes, uncover, and flush with steaming-hot water
Taco Seasoning is easy to make
Taco Seasoning
1 T chili powder
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1 1/2 tsp cumin
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
Combine ingredients in a small jar
If you add vodka to your pie crust recipe, it will make your crust more moist and easier to work with, preventing the gluten in the flour from binding, resulting in a more tender and flakier crust…who knew???
See the recipe for the vodka pie crust from Cook’s Illustrated here and Pizzeria Pie here
Can you freeze lemons?
Yep, just toss fresh lemons in the freezer and you will always have fresh lemon juice
Brine chicken overnight in buttermilk for extra moisture and tenderness
Make 1 cup heavy cream out of 2/3 cup whole milk and 1/3 cup butter. This will not whip, but it is great for savory sauces, soups, potato dishes and casseroles. For baking or ice cream you’ll need the real deal
Make your own powdered sugar in a blender
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 Tbsp corn starch
Place ingredients in blender. Blend on high speed for 15-30 seconds, until sugar has turned into powder. Wait a minute or two for the dust to settle before opening lid
Have a wonderful random day!

Love these tips Jenna!
Great tips, Jenna! My Mother always brined her chicken in buttermilk, and her fried chicken was the best! Happy Wednesday!
What a great post! They’re all good tips, but the baking soda didn’t work for me and my drain – it was too far neglected. Note to self: buy barkeeper’s friend.
Great tips to remember Jenna. I do use non fat buttermilk for my chicken, and you are right, keeps it moist and so tender when baked. I really needed the taco seasoning mix recipe, I don’t like using premixed from the grocer, this way I can control the spices. Thanks Jenna…..
yes, it’s nice to be able to control the spices…rain rain go away 🙂
Now this is a handy post. 🙂
We love BKF and have used it for years. I’m always surprised how many people don’t know about it.
Baking soda is a life saver for everything from clearing the drain to curing heartburn. Just saying. 🙂
We much prefer homemade taco seasoning because the packets are too salty.
Thanks for this. Sharing. 🙂
thanks Stacey! Baking soda for heartburn is a new one for me, how does that work?
Thank you for these great tips Jenna, especially the plate scratch repair one and the spray olive oil!

I’ve got to try this, thanks Mary!!
I’m bookmarking this one, Jenna. Especially the baking soda, lemons and bar friend. And taco seasoning. Yes, you can see why I’m saving it!
Thanks for coming to the Gypsy and your wonderful comments. With no-reply I can’t respond directly but know that I appreciate every single word! Happy day!
So many great tips Jenna, thanks! I learned all kinds of new things today!
Jenna, thanks for all the wonderful tips. I especially like the one about removing scratches from plates. I hope that you are having a wonderful week!!!
Thx Shannon, it requires a little elbow grease but it works like magic!
