Fearless Friday, Art Imitating Flowers

Last week we created a Summer Cottage interior in 2 ways,

one with the urban sketching and watercolor technique

and one with colored pencil

Today we are going to color a detailed sketch with markers

to demonstrate how different mediums create different effects,

and there is another free printable

for you to experiment with

This beautiful arrangement is by Shirley @ Housepitality Designs

I sketched the arrangement in pencil,

picking the vase as a start point and working my way up

and through the arrangement

shape by shape, flower by flower

Then I went back over the whole sketch with ink

{Sorry the photo is so dark, the lighting was terrible that day}

Remember if you aren’t comfortable with drawing freehand,

you can use a lightbox or a window to trace a photo

Flowers make wonderful subjects

because you really can’t make a mistake,

their shapes vary and are assymetrical

Now let’s color!

for the free printable click here

With a marker color chart next to my sketchbook

with a photo of the arrangement,

I started with the vase,

coloring the darkest blue areas with several shades of blue,

and leaving the white paper to be the highlights on the top and base

I added the bonsai tree design

and used a cream marker for the background

and began to color the flowers

I used several shades of pink

and added a light green to the stems and leaves

Next came some yellow

Then oranges

The flowers were finished with varying shades of orange, pink and yellow

and a darker green was added to the stems and leaves

I added a blue dot background with a Zig Clean Color Dot Pen

“Shirley’s Flowers” 7″ x 10″ markers on mixed media paper

Art imitating flowers…

I want to paint this arrangement with acrylic too,

which will give it an entirely different feel

Art in Bloom

Try using different mediums for the same subject,

it can be amazing how different they look!

Have Fun and Be Fearless!

Juicy Details

I am currently using this set of Caliart Markers,

they are reasonably priced, 121 colors for $45,

as compared to Copic, 72 colors for $275
