Fearless Friday, Garden Tomatoes

Since I’m vacationing with my family this week,

I am resharing a watercolor tutorial for tomatoes

After flowers,

food is my second favorite subject to draw and paint,

especially tomatoes

The stores and produce stands are filling up with fat juicy summer tomatoes

so grab some and before you eat them,

paint them!

These tomatoes came from my neighbors garden

Before I made Summer Tomato Slab Pie

I took a photo of the beautiful garden tomatoes

so I could paint them

If you look closely you can see many different colors

on what at first glance is a simple red tomato

So many different shades of red, plus yellow, orange,

lime, brownish green, and very white highlights

I started with a very light pencil sketch to establish the composition,

and began with some very pale yellows

Next, some orange areas

Then reds

This is the mini easel I use when I paint on the porch,

and I keep the reference photo and a color chart close by

I like to work all areas of a painting at once,

it helps build form and colors uniformly

Deepening the tones, and working on the stem areas

Now more reds, and I even used a touch of purple

to darken some of the areas

Final touches…

A little green for the background

Garden Tomatoes is available as a framed print here,

and you have options of 6 different frame colors and print sizes

Or maybe you need a tote bag for the farmer’s market

Or a pillow for your porch…pillows come in 4 sizes and 2 styles

I love your tomato painting. I admire you for your watercolor mad skills. Trip and I are growing Cherokee purple tomatoes, and they are growing like crazy! We’ll share some with you when they’re ripe.

    • Thank you! I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Cherokee purple tomatoes…one of my grandsons eats cherry tomatoes like candy, we have some growing in Bham and he eats them before we can even bring them inside!

Jenna, love how you talk us through the process including the range of colors. The touch of purple baffled me, but I can see how well it works. Thanks for sharing at the FWF link party, and I hope you have a nice vacation break.

I hope you’re having a grand time! Loved the tomato tutorial. They’re just lovely in form…such variety in color and shape and when you cut them open the structure is wonderful. Very inspiring, thank you!
