Fearless Friday, French Shoppe urban sketching
Let’s take a trip to Paris today for a little urban sketching
Urban sketching is the act of drawing what you see around you,
houses, buildings, cityscapes
typically done in a fast, loose manner with ink
and then brought to life with watercolor
Unfortunately I was not on the streets of Paris when I drew this,
but sitting in my studio only dreaming and sketching from a photo
I started with a very rough pencil sketch just to establish the main lines
Please keep in mind this is just a fast a loose technique
and my lines tend to be a little wonky…
no fuss or rulers involved
It looks pretty bad at this point but continue on,
with color and details magic can happen!
I have no idea what Laduree means,
I looked it up on several French translation sites
and in a French English dictionary but no results
The flowers and greenery are painted with watercolor
in loose squiggly strokes
A yellow wash to brighten the interior
and a gold marker for the lettering and awning trim
Pale blue for the shop and light pink for the walls
Darks add depth
Ink lines and squiggles highlight the foliage
Nothing fancy, just a fun 30 minutes with a pen and watercolor

His lines are wonky too 😊

Lovely work as always. I am currently taking painting classes and envy your talent and skill. Wikipedia offers the info below on Laduree. They appear to be international now.
Pâtisserie E. Ladurée, commonly known as Ladurée (French pronunciation: [la.dy.ʁe]), is a French manufacturer and retailer of high-end pastries and candy, which was established in 1862. It is one of the world’s best-known sellers of the double-decker macaron, 15,000 of which are sold every day. The company is a société par actions simplifiée (simplified joint stock corporation) and has its head office in Marcq-en-Barœul, France.[2][3]

What a beautiful sketch! This brought back memories. I have been to the Ladurée Bakery in London. They are quite famous for their amazing macarons! How beautiful this would be in a kitchen that has a French flair.

Jenna, I love your watercolor of Laduree! I have been to the one in NYC and the macarons are beyond fabulous. You can order them by mail. To think you did this is 30 minutes is totally amazing! Happy weekend and be careful in the high winds tomorrow!
Thank you Pam, I wish I had known Laduree was a famous patisserie, I would have put macarons in the window instead of bottles! I thought it was perhaps some kind of fancy perfumery! How lovely to have been there. I am on the coast this week with the Spring Breakers, I hope the wind isn’t too bad up there…

Jenna, Ladurée is a favorite teatime retreat for me when I do visit Paris. There are numerous locations, and each one unique unto itself. Oh, how I miss Paris! Thank you for giving me a little touch of Paris in this post. Your art is delightful as always. I so admire your talent!
