Fearless Friday, Red Apples

With my thoughts turning to September and Fall,
apples came to mind…

Let’s paint some!

Start with a pencil sketch to establish their shapes and position

I started by painting the highlight areas near the stem
with yellow green and ochre

Then shades of pale orange and red

Then more highlight areas surrounded by shades of red

The stem was painted with ochre, dark brown and a tiny touch of black

A blue shadow is the final touch and grounds the apples
“Red Apples” 5″ x 6″ gouache on mixed media paper

I painted this with gouache paint
Gouache is like watercolor except it’s not transparent
so it has the ability to cover like acrylic
My experience with gouache painting is limited
but I will share tips I discover as I experiment…
I recommend the gouache set pictured below
It comes in a convenient case with 24 colors,
3 brushes and a plastic palette tray
It is very affordable at $25.49 from Amazon here
I am not an affiliate, just sharing what I like

Happy Painting

You make painting seem so easy. We’re you a teacher at some point?
Thank you LInda, no, I’ve never taught, but I have been painting my whole life, I majored in Art in college
Wonderful, our local Apple Festival is this weekend, it is the perfect transition from summer into fall.
Oh that sounds like fun!
I have worked in gouache though not very comfrotable in it. I really do love your apples. You caught them perfectly!
Thank you Jeanie! I look forward to exploring more with gouache, I have seen some stunning paintings done with it.
Nicely done! Apples remind me of comfort things: fall, going back to school, and autumn leaves.
Yes, apples really do trigger those kinds of memories!
I have never worked with gouache…..september is apple month around here!
Thanks Patti, as I said I know little about it, but I’m looking forward to experimenting more~~
I so love your painting posts Jenna! Even though I don’t paint myself, I love watching the picture come together, and how you do the highlights – how you see the colors and shapes is fascinating. And the result is lovely! Thanks for the beautiful entertainment this morning, and Happy Labor Day Weekend!
Thanks so much Barbara, so nice of you~
Jenna, apples always remind me of fall. This is a perfect to welcome September. I think I need to make an apple cake. Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!

Oh yes, apples, fall, and for me–the big fall fair that was so much fun. I love this time of year, on the cusp of fall waiting for the cool weather and the changing leaves. Thanks for sharing these apples, and evoking memories like some of your other readers had. Happy Labor Day–hope you and your gang have a wonderful time! Love to all, Georgia Gal

Beautiful Jenna – and I agree that apples just say fall. These definitely look good enough to eat and you captured them perfectly! Or maybe an apple crisp? Hope you had a lovely long weekend down in paradise and wishing you a lovely week!
