Creations, Travelin’ Toy Tote

My niece’s son turned 2 recently, which technically makes him my “great nephew,” but that sounds pretty awkward to me so I think I’ll just call him my niece’s son.  Anyway, he is a cutie patootie, and just at the age where independence is a priority.  I thought he might enjoy having his own little bag to carry around and put a few toys or snacks in when he goes visiting.

I found this denim bag cruising around Hobby Lobby the other day, it measures about  9″x 8” and cost $2.99.  Big enough to put a few little toys in and a snack, yet small enough for him to carry around.  Please ignore my desk, art is messy…well, I’m messy…

I found a font I liked [from a needlepoint website, barbarabergstendesigns.com, and chose his first  initial and blew it up to the size I wanted for the bag.  I printed it and cut it out and used it as a template to trace onto the bag.  I outlined the letter with chalk and began filling it in with white acrylic paint.  I mixed a little clear gloss medium into the paint just to make it flow smoother over the rough fabric.

I did not use fabric paint [mainly because I don’t have any] and this item is not going to be washed regularly like clothing would be.  Acrylic paint doesn’t wash out of clothes anyway, TRUST ME, I have ruined lots of clothes!  It will crack and stiffen, so if you are going to paint fabric research  your options before choosing paint.  In this case the initial just lays flat on the front of the bag so it doesn’t matter.

I took a clean sponge and cleaned off the chalk outline

I added some lime green abstract tiger like stripes and outlined the letter with red dots

I let it dry thoroughly and set overnight,  then filled it with the essentials…

Car keys, cell phone, a good book, and most important, some Super Heros and the Batmobile!

Add a cute tag……Happy Birthday!
