Gifts from the Kitchen, Cheddar Cheese Cookies with a Painted Jar

Cheese Straws, Cheese Puffs, Cheese Cookies, Cheese Wafers…no matter what you call them, they are irresistible and a must for any Southern occasion!  When I saw this recipe for Cheddar Spritz Crackers on Happier Than a Pig in Mud, I knew they would be in my kitchen asap!

I decided to make a batch for my cheese loving SIL for his birthday

The recipe is just a basic dough that came together quickly with the help of a food processor

Lots of options here, make the cookies any size you want by adjusting the diameter of the dough log, and how thick you slice the cookies

You could also add a pecan half on top~

I decided to put them in a jar for a little special touch

I bought this Anchor Hocking tilted jar at Target and painted the lid with chalk paint

2 coats, then some cream stripes with a square flat brush

I wasn’t worried about the knob because it was going to get some bling

This was an old earring

I sprayed the lid  with clear coat varnish and used E6000 glue to attach the decorative earring

I wrapped the cookies in baggies of 8 to keep them as fresh as possible

Cheddar Cheese Cookies

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 13 minutes
Chill time 30 minutes
Course Appetizer, Snack
Cuisine American
Servings 36 cookies

Ingredients
  

  • 8 oz Extra Sharp Cheddar [Cracker Barrel]
  • 8 oz Vermont White Cheddar [Cracker Barrel]
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 2 T Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • red pepper or cayenne to taste [optional]

Instructions
 

  • Use a food processor to grate the cheese.
  • Switch blade from grater to mixing blade and add butter and Worchestershire sauce. Pulse/process to combine, scraping down sides as necessary.
  • Add flour, salt and seasonings. Process/pulse until dough forms.
  • Divide dough in half and roll into logs about 2 inches in diameter. Wrap in saran and refrigerate at least 30 minutes.
  • Slice into 1/2″ slices and lay on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 375 for 13 minutes, or until set and edges are just beginning to brown.
  • Cool on pan 1 minute, then transfer to wire rack. Makes 36 wafers. Store in a tightly covered container

Notes

Refresh cookies by toasting in a toaster oven or baking on a baking sheet at 350 for 5 minutes. They are so good warm!

    Jenna, I just made the cookies with only Cabot’s Habanero cheddar…oh my gosh, they are delicious with a little kick! My next ones will be with Cabot’s Chipotle, to go with chili, if I can find it around here…might have to get one of my siblings to send me a package. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
