Fearless Friday, Turnip
In October I tried an “Alphabet Challenge,” one drawing a day, of a food titled with a different letter every day, A-Z
The food itself didn’t have to begin with the letter, an adjective or descriptive word left room for lots of imagination
I wanted to practice different lettering styles too
the goal was to basically let loose and experiment
Learn what my various pens, pencils and markers could do
This was SO MUCH fun !!
I must confess I didn’t quite make it, by Oct 31 I was still a few letters short…but I’ll get there
Not only was this a fun challenge, here are 5 things I loved about it
- I experimented with lots of different art supplies
2. learned some new tricks and techniques
3. honed my drawing and lettering skills
4. and lost some fear of trying complex subjects I would have never tried before
5. I found myself looking forward to the time I could spend doing it
I highly recommend you challenging yourself to a daily art creation, or at least spending 10 minutes on something, you will be amazed at your results!
Today I am sharing “Turn ip,” one of my favorites from last month
The process
Find an inspiration photo, and collect your supplies
I keep all my markers and pencils organized by color, in jars on a handy portable trays
The tray on the left holds only black pens with different tips while the tray on the right holds all the color
This day I opted to be outside so I took my color tray with me, just grabbing a couple of black pens from the other tray
I wish I could source my inspiration photo but I have no idea where it came from
Chose the pencils and markers before you start and make a color chart on the side of the page
This will help not wasting time rifling through everything
You can always add another color or pen, but making the basic color decisions is such a time saver
Do a pencil sketch first if that makes you more comfortable
I spent hundreds of hours with pencils and sketchbooks in many college courses to be able to quickly draw what I see, it’s just a matter of repetition and practice
regular practice will pay off, I promise!
This is where the fearless comes in, color!
I used a combination of color tones, several different pen tips and colored pencil
Constant layering, adding, changing…
When I began to letter the word, I realized that I wasn’t going to have enough space
So turnip became turn ip!

I love the colors in the turnip. I agree about practice. I quit painting lessons almost two years ago and spent a year and a half on drawing (same teacher) and I’m so happy I did because I think it’s made me a better painter!

Jenna you are fearless with your art and cooking! I love the turn-ip!
I learned how much daily practice paid off this summer when all I did was paint. Skill increased so much. But then I get home from the lake and life gets in the way and I don’t keep up. I will take you up on your challenge, certainly by January 1, but hopefully before. I love the 10 minutes a day (which can be more if we like!). It’s so little time but it is actually DOING it. Your organizational tips are really good ones, too!
