Home Decor, Dining Room Drama

June 2017

“Hey, sometime when your crew has some down time, I would love to get them to paint the dining room”

My son, HHjr, owns a residential remodeling company, specializing in tile installations, but his guys are fabulous at everything, including painting

Sometimes when their schedule gets messed up, due to weather or tile deliveries, he sends them over to our house to do various things that need doing…quite a perk!

“What color?” he asked

“Black” I said

“BLACK??” he questioned

“Yes, black.  Just the wall below the chair rail”

December 19, 2017

“Hey mom, my guys are going to paint the dining room tomorrow and install that new cooktop you’ve been wanting”

😳

“Okaaaayyyyy,” I said, thinking Yikes!  22 people are coming for Christmas Eve brunch in 4 days

The dining room was sort of a hot mess anyway,  the centerpiece was done, but I hadn’t set the table yet

But the thought of emptying the china cabinet was the stuff of nightmares

Crystal stemware, fine china, silver…

😱

“I might be able to just slide it out away from the wall” HHjr said

😵

He is a very strong guy 💪🏼

Of course when the black was finished the creamy tan walls looked awful

“I think we should paint the walls too Mom,” he said

Ah, the artist in him emerges…

“That would be wonderful!”

at this point I was all in

The trim work in this room is so pretty but it had never been showcased properly

and the electrical outlets were an eyesore

With black socket covers they disappeared!

Ahhh, the magic of paint!

Now this wall is screaming for a big painting

I would love to do a large black and white modern abstract

or I could hang Summer Burst in here

What do you think?

I am crazy about the way it turned out, and it actually makes the room look and feel so much bigger!!

And of course, now I want to paint the whole house…

January 7, 2018

“Hey Mom, my job got cancelled for tomorrow so we’re going to paint the kitchen,”  HHjr texted, “Look over those color samples I gave you awhile back and let me know what color”

😳

Yikes, I’m 300 miles away!

Stay tuned…

Thanks for stopping by~

  1. It’s stunning Jenna. Voting for modern b and w abstract myself.

Oh Jenna, more drama! Remembering you telling me about this as it was happening I thought you would never pull Christmas off! After learning how your son moved the china cabinet without clearing it out was a time and energy saver. I think he uses all the tricks of the trade with you. Your dining room looks gorgeous! I thought it did before but I love the new colors. Now which painting, I love them both! Good luck in the kitchen and I think your kitchen is in good hands……

    • haha, thanks Emily, they did such a great job in the dining room I have total confidence. Whites can be so tricky put he’s great at color. He painted his sister’s gray kitchen over 3 times before he finally told her he was picking the color and then it was finally right! But of course now I want to do new paintings for the kitchen too…very cloudy and gloomy on the coast, but at least it’s so much warmer than last week~

Oh, my gosh! That’s the stuff that would prompt a mental episode for me – I HATE spontaneity when it comes to me needing to organize – I like to plan on my schedule! But, I completely understand the nature of HHjr’s availability, so I probably wouldn’t have decorated that room, lol. I LOVE the final look, and I might go with the abstract – why not? You can always change it later.
Have fun in that kitchen….what a way to start 2018. A pain to go through, but great when it’s done.

    • Ha, I’m pretty used to surprises…it’s killing me that I’m not there to put the kitchen back together, but I know they will do a great job, you wouldn’t believe how neat they are. Plus they have cleaned behind things that haven’t been moved in years! There is definitely going to be a large black and white abstract in one of the rooms, can’t wait to get started, thanks Rita!

  5. It looks so elegant! I know what you mean about emptying the china cabinet — but I think I’d be even more worried about moving it, all that crystal tipping. Very glad there were no incidents! (And did the cooktop get installed?)

So, I think the painting is a preference. I’m a color girl and not terribly elegant so my pref would be something with a lot of bright and color to it. But there would be a striking beauty and formality to a black-and-white abstract. I’ll be curious to see what you end up with!

    • Thanks Jeanie! Yes they did get the cooktop installed and that was another 1/2 day of drama, but it’s dreamy now. Thanks for the feedback on the painting, it seems everyone is voting for black and white abstract so I am definitely going to do one, then try it out in several different spots. Thank you for your adorable hand painted Christmas card, so sweet! Happy painting~

  6. Sharon Mann says:

Cool changes, I do like the BW abstract.

    • I have done lots of abstracts on commission, but never one for myself, never thought one would work in this house but now I feel like I have tons of possibilities! Thanks Sharon!

Lucky you Jenna to have a son with the resources and crew to make a paint job or installation happen! Love the dramatic black paint addition in your dining room. Hope you’re as pleased with your kitchen paint job! 🙂

Jenna, I love the dining room…that is a major change! I vote for the abstract! I had a client that wanted her foyer black and when we finished it was fabulous! What a great way to begin the new year! What color will the kitchen be?

  9. Jodi says:

LOVE IT!!!!!! I want to do something brave and dramatic too! Go for the black and white abstract for sure!!!!

  10. Lucky you!! I need a son with that business!! Love the black and white in the room, however, it looks like I am in the minority for the painting choice. I thought the abstract might be too modern with your furniture and chose the floral painting (and I am usually a B&W gal)….anxious to see what you choose and how it looks! I can’t believe they move the china cabinet (that is something I would try to do – and then regret it after a crash!!)

  11. LOL It’s a good thing you’re away, Jenna! Of course you know I want you to hang summer burst!!! It’s my favorite. Your dining room looks so pretty, and the paint is a perfect compliment to MacKenzie-Childs pretties!

  12. Jill Kuhn says:

The black and white are very striking and look wonderful with your decor, Jenna! ❤️ I love how paint can really spruce things up. 😃 I’d suggest you hang the picture you like for awhile to see if it gives you the feeling you want in the room. You can always change it. 👍

  13. lulu says:

Painting is the cheapest way to redecorate. Goodness knows I’ve done it a million times, generally on a whim. I like the painting and have no problem with it in the space.

  14. Cyndi Raines says:

Very elegant Jenna! Happy for you that it turned out so lovely. What a blessing to have such a great, hard working son! Eager to see your kitchen. I think I would go with a black and white painting. I know you will have fun with redecorating your newly painted spaces.

  15. Julie says:

Hi Jenna, I love the way the dining room wall trim came out. You are so lucky to have your son and his guys do the work for you! I would love to see your flower painting in the DR!
Enjoy your dining room redo. Thanks for sharing at C&C with J&J.
    Julie

  16. I love your before and after dinning room! It is amazing how paint can transform a room. Your modern artwork looks fabulous.

  17. I absolutely love the black, such a gorgeous and dramatic color. Looks wonderful!
