Fearless Friday, Zentangle

My current artistic passion is Zentangle
Even if you haven’t heard of it, I bet you’ve seen some Zentangle art
You do not have to be an artist to have fun with Zentangle!!
Think of it as doodling with a purpose and a focused mind
Choose a small paper or divide a larger paper into sections either beforehand or as you go
Fill in the space with repetitive lines and shapes, with no set plan, just letting your pen do what it wants
Just begin!
Go with your first instinct and see what happens
You can’t make a mistake, in my way of doing Zentangle there are no rules
I love it when there are no rules 😄
Zentangle is basically defined as an abstract drawing using repetitive patterns
Zentangle is drawing anyone can do, and is considered to be meditative and pleasurable*
The Zentangle Method* states that true zentangle drawings must be done on white paper with a black pen, along with some other specifics
Well, that’s no fun!
And there are no rules remember?
I started with watercolor shapes and built patterns to connect them
I hope you’ll give it a try, it’s tons of fun, definitely therapeutic, and a little addicting!

*The formal definition of Zentangle is below
“A Zentangle drawing is an abstract drawing created using repetitive patterns according to the trademarked Zentangle Method. True Zentangle drawings are always created on 3.5 inch (8.9 cm) square tiles, and they are always done in black ink on white paper with grey pencil shading” {source}
The Zentangle Method helps you create a feeling of “”relaxed focus””. Unlike doodling, the person creating a Zentangle is giving it his or her full, undivided attention. A Zentangle cannot be created while on the phone or to let yourself be distracted during a lecture, because attention is an inherent part of this art form. {source}
Try Zentangle and see what you can create!
Be Fearless!

Wow! Beautiful😊
Thank you, total fun!
Fun! This is one of the techniques that the kids would learn in the district I taught in. They would go crazy with it. I think we still have some of the pieces my own sons made. 😉
Definitely a great project with kids!
I have doodled around with this technique for a few years – I have always been a “doodler” My mom enjoys it, too! I love to see phrases dolled up with this method! Fun, fun, fun, especially because anyone can do it and there can be no mistakes!
It really is very freeing!
I love your Zen bottle! I don’t get that there is a rule for Zentangle if there are no rules. To me, the whole thing is the “zen” of doing it. Relaxing, fun. I love adding the color. I especially love your idea of starting with the color blocks and then connecting them. Aren’t the artists’ tiles great? They’re fun for experimenting with a new technique too and not blowing through the good stuff.
I’m sorry that was a little confusing about the no rules, I was trying to say that the original true Zentangle method has rules, but my takeoff is a no rule, anything goes version. It is lots of fun and very relaxing!
Well, Jenna I have never heard of Zentangle! It looks like something I could actually do. Maybe one day, I will try. But meanwhile, I will enjoy your fabulous creativity…Happy Weekend!
Thank you Pam, I’m pretty happy if I have a pen in my hand at all times!
FUN!!!
I love to learn a new word and today’s word is zentangle! I love it. The bottle is darling. Have a wonderful weekend.
These are so much fun, Jenna. I like coloring them, too. You should make and publish a coloring book!
I like how you added watercolors to your doodles! 😍 This is one of my favorite ways to relax, in fact I just started one the other day. ❤️ I call my doodles, zen doodles. 🎨👍
Wonderful designs and illustrations, Jenna.
I love this post! I have only recently discovered Zentangle after delving into doodling. My goal is to be able to sketch a thing or two, and perhaps come up with a personal coloring book for my grandkids. There is an entire world out there of doodling, Zentangle, creative lettering, the works, and it is all a ton of fun. I tend to be a rule follower, so I’ve been practicing on white paper with a black pen, but thanks to you I think I’m going to mix things up.
Have fun Pattie! And be careful, it’s very addictive 🙂
I’ve never heard of Zentangle Jenna. I love your creative white on black version with a dash of color 🙂
I like the zentangle form you made on the green bottle. The colors are pretty!
