Fearless Friday, Garden Tomatoes

Before I made Summer Tomato Slab Pie I took a photo of the beautiful garden tomatoes so I could paint them
If you look closely you can see many different colors on what at first glance is a simple red tomato
So many different shades of red, plus yellow, orange, lime, brownish green, and very white highlights
I started with a very light pencil sketch to establish the composition, and began with some very pale yellows
Next, some orange areas
Then reds
This is the mini easel I use when I paint on the porch, and I keep the reference photo and a color chart close by
I like to work all areas of a painting at once, it helps build form and colors uniformly
Deepening the tones, and working on the stem areas
Now more reds, and I even used a touch of purple to darken some of the areas
Final touches…
A little green for the background
Garden Tomatoes is available as a framed print here, and you have options of 6 different frame colors and print sizes
Or maybe you need a tote bag for the farmer’s market
Or a pillow for your porch…pillows come in 4 sizes and 2 styles
Garden Tomatoes in available on 17 other products as well, when you click on the green highlighted words it will take you to one of the garden tomato products pages and down at the bottom of the page you can see all the items available in this design. Click on the item photo you like and it will take you to that page for ordering and information
I’m not much of a gardener, but I love to paint tomatoes!

Beautiful work, Jenna. ❤️
I love watching how you build up color and the tomatoes come to life. 😀
thank you Patty Anne, much appreciated…
I really love how you teach us, showing the layering and reminding us of all the colors we really see when we are seeing “red.” It’s really a lovely painting, Jenna, and I think th eidea of the farmers’ market bag is perfect!
thanks Jeanie, happy painting!
Amazing…they look like the real ones and good enough to eat! 🍅
thanks Cyndi, tomatoes fascinate me for some reason, I love to paint them!
Just beautiful Jenna! I love the idea of your tomato art as a farmers market tote! Happy Friday! 🌞⚓️ 🌴🚤🍅
How beautiful, Jenna! You do such great work. I just love the tote and pillow that you created.
Happy weekend to you at your lovely spot on the water.
Thank you Kitty!
It is so much fun to see everyday things through your artist’s eye! When you mentioned all the colors you saw in the bunch of tomatoes, and mentioned “white”, I had to scroll back to the picture, and sure enough, there were the white spots of reflected light on the bunch! I hadn’t picked that color up at all. I love your sketching and have gained such an appreciation for how artists build their pictures. Anything beyond crayons and coloring books is impossible for me, so to watch you bring so much to life to a canvas is an absolute treat! Thank you, Jenna.
Thank you so much Rosie, painting is truly my happy place 🙂
Jenna, the tote would be perfect to take to our farmers markets or even to the grocery store! I can’t wait for yummy vine-ripened tomatoes! Your painting is beautiful. Have a wonderful weekend!
Thank you Pam!
I love the watercolor tomato painting you made Jenna. So perfect for summer. Thanks for sharing it at Cooking and Crafting with J &J. Enjoy the week
