July was #Worldwatercolormonth, a daily challenge to promote interest in the arts, and to raise money for art supplies for children all over the world

I enjoyed challenging myself to paint one watercolor a day, which is a lot harder than it sounds,… some days I did several and other days I did none…

If you are lucky enough to have a space to paint with your supplies at hand, it makes daily painting much more likely

I mixed it up by doing some large detailed paintings like

Fresh Vegetables

And some quick loose paintings, like this “Puddle Pear”

This method is fun because the paint is going to dictate and surprise you!

With a large fat brush put a thin puddle of water in an area, in the general shape of what you are painting, and drop a few drops of color into the wet area.  Let the paint spread as it wants to or tip and turn the paper to encourage it in a direction.  Let it dry thoroughly.  It will look totally different after it dries.

For this pear, I did two puddles, a large one for the pear bottom with green and yellow, then a smaller shape above for the pear top, with yellow and red.

Once the pear was dry I added the stem and shadows

Fast & Fun!

“Lake View” was created in a similar way, with large areas painted with water first, then color dropped in to run and spread out

In July I ordered the SketchBox Special Release grab box,  and one of the items was a set of General Watercolor pencils, plus 2 single Faber Castell single watercolor pencils

The Faber Castell pencils have a soft grip which makes them really nice

Watercolor pencils really are magic, you put down some color

Blend with water and voilà “Beach Path”

Magic!

This is another fun thing to try, do an ink drawing first, with a waterproof liner pen, then add soft layers of watercolor
