Take-out Tuesday, Take-out Pizza and Amped up Mac & Cheese

As much as we love to cook around here, we have our favorite short cuts too..

For this week’s Take-out Tuesday,

I am recommending several really good take-out foods,

that you can pick up and cook at home

As I write this, on Sunday, the forecast on Tuesday is snow…

Snow is a rare event in Alabama,

we don’t have the equipment to handle it,

and it generally shuts down the entire area

Everyone has a snow story…

Hitting the grocery stores is mandatory, shoppers fill their carts to the brim and hope they are lucky enough to grab that last loaf of bread…on Saturday I popped into Publix to get a few things and before I knew it, I was in full snow panic!

I had a cart full, ingredients for beef stew, spaghetti, tacos, plus fresh fruits and vegetables…we are set for the week snow or no snow!

Fingers crossed that everyone is safe and warm this morning!

Over the weekend HHjr cooked the first pizzas in the new pizza oven.  We are definitely going to make our own with fresh dough and toppings, but until he practices a little, adjusting the fire and experimenting, he suggested trying pizzas from Papa Murphy’s.  This is not a sponsored post, just sharing information…

Papa Murphy’s offers Take and Bake pizzas, you choose the type of crust and toppings, they assemble the pizzas, and you bake them at home.  On Fridays they have $5 large 1 topping pizzas, cheese, sausage or pepperoni, so I bought a couple to experiment with

To cook in the pizza oven, you first build a fire in the middle, then as the oven heats and the fire gets going really well, it is pushed to one side.  The pizza is placed on the other side, and the shape of the oven and the draft from the chimney, draw the flames over the pizza

It is the craziest thing you’ve ever seen~

Not bad for the first pizza!

Another family favorite is good ol’ macaroni and cheese…I have several easy recipes, Magic Mac & Cheese 1-2-3, Lightened Up Mac & Cheese, No Boil Mac & Cheese

But we often let Stouffer’s do the cooking and buy their frozen macaroni and cheese

Since fancy macaroni and cheese seems to be trending, with restaurants offering versions like lobster mac and cheese, HHjr decided to make his own version with a few of his favorite things

Bourbon, Brussels Sprouts and Bacon!

He cooked bacon

Then he caramelized onions and sauteed purple Brussels sprouts with a little bacon fat

Baked the macaroni and cheese

And combined everything plus a splash of bourbon

He was taking it to a cookout at a friend’s house but I was lucky enough to get a few photos and a bowl full for my dinner

Psst…you might find PF Chang’s Orange Chicken in my freezer too…

Do you have any great take out dishes that you turn to on busy or tired days?

Please share in the comment section!!

Oooh… I wish I had some of your son’s Bourbon, Brussels Sprouts and Bacon Mac & Cheese in my freezer Jenna! Have fun experimenting with your pizza oven! Hope you’re staying warm & cozy. They’re calling for our rain to switch over to a wintry mix after the cold air arrives but it will probably more of a rain event for us.

  2. These are all such good comfort food ideas for cold days. Since we’re in the deep freeze up here (though we only got about six or seven inches of snow yesterday, even though it’s still coming down — they predicted 10-12) baking seems good to me. I braved the beginning of the storm to do as you did and they were almost out of EGGS! I guess it makes sense… of course I bought some too!

Jenna, that Mac and cheese sounds most scrumptious! Oh, how I adore Mac and Cheese. It is the ultimate comfort food. I adore pizza, too. How exciting to be cooking in your new pizza oven! I hope to have one some day. Enjoy your Tuesday, and stay warm!

  4. Mac & cheese is the ultimate comfort food, and HHjr’s recipe looks divine! The pizza oven is going to be so much fun! We didn’t get a single snow flake, and I was so hoping. Stay warm on this cold and windy day!

  5. Sharon Mann says:

Great to see the pizza oven in action. And, you really have some weather.

What a great way to dress up the Mac & cheese. Your pizza looks fantastic too!!

  7. Nancy says:

Have so much fun with that pizza oven! I loved your sons recipe for Mac and Cheese!!

  8. Lynn says:

Tell ya what, I wish I had a plate full of all of them in front of me right now! Purple Brussels sprouts are new to me, gonna be on the look out for them. Be safe in the snow Jenna:@)

    • thanks Lynn, didn’t get even a flake, and the whole city was shut down!! Purple Brussels sprouts are only available for a limited time in the winter…I like them because they are smaller

I have been craving mac n cheese for several days and I do wish yours was in front of me right now. Instead it will be a bowl of reheated potato kale soup.

That pizza oven looks like so much fun – and OMG to that Mac n Cheese – lucky you for getting a portion!!!

Jenna, I think it’s great you have the wonderful fireplace and pizza oven only steps out the back door. HHjr did a fabulous job of building it. I’m sure your family will enjoy making their individual pizza from a pizza bar. HHjr’s Mac and Cheese has me craving a big bowl. I think if he ever changes careers he could be a chef! We make our own pizzas, sometimes on the grill using frozen curst or fresh from Publix.. I love veggies for mine and Jim loves meat. I did get all my shopping done for the winter storm, now I have all this food I need to freeze!

    • He uses the fresh dough from Publix all the time, with nice weather {well, warm anyway} this weekend I see more pizzas on the horizon! I am chuckling about your groceries, there were a lot of frustrated people yesterday as the snowcopolis turned out to be a noshowsnowpolis! I can’t believe how cold it is further north, we are lucky indeed!

  12. Brussels sprouts, bourbon, and bacon! That sounds like poetry! I have all of the ingredients for this and the mac and cheese. With wind chill expected to be -31° tomorrow, I am staying in. This sounds like it would be great to enjoy in front of the fire.

  13. Cyndi Raines says:

You have read my mind! I just told my hubby, I want to try my hand at homemade mac and cheese and you have provided the recipes for it, thank you! Tomorrow, I will try the 1,2,3 version and just maybe add a little bacon to it too, Hehe! Glad your pizza oven is now in operation. I am sure your Chef son, will have it down pat in no time, he really is talented. Stay warm and cook on! 😊

  14. Jill Kuhn says:

We are huge fans of Papa Murphies pizza!! 🍕👍 So cool that you got to try out the new pizza oven, Jenna! 😃 And your son’s mac and cheese looks soooo yummy! Stouffers does make good Mac and Cheese, I agree! 🧀🥓 It has been so cold everywhere! Hope you stay warm and safe!

  15. Miz Helen says:
