Fearless Friday, Wild Flower Field

Last week we talked about the similarities between cooking and painting
I shared my Recipe for a Painting
and the preparations I do to get started
Today, let’s paint!
I started with the sky, using a light application of white
letting the red come through producing a sunset like glow
Then I blended in pale blue establishing the horizon line
Using a large flat brush, I loaded it with ultramarine blue and mixed greens
I painted hills and large areas where the tree groupings would be
Then I added yellow to the same brush and painted the sunlit area of the meadow
Blending as I brought it forward to the center of the painting
Next I painted the bottom edge of the canvas, where the meadow will be the lightest
I added a touch of turquoise blue for interest
A bit of unexpected color can add interest and draw the eye forward
Then I continued adding blues, greens and yellows
blending the two areas together and filling out the tree shapes
I began adding the grasses with short quick strokes
Gradually lengthening the strokes creates depth
I used fairly dry strokes for the grasses to give them texture
After the grass was dry I started the flowers
Sunflowers centers with raw umber and raw sienna
Sunflower petals painted with a brush loaded with Cad yellow medium and Cad orange
Daisy centers of yellow
White petals make dancing daisies
A red poppy and blue field flowers, smaller as they recede in the distance
Towards the end of a painting I tend to get pretty involved and forget to take pictures
I added more fantasy field flowers and declared it finished
“Sally’s Wild Flower Field” acrylic on a 36 inch x 36 inch gallery wrapped canvas
Happy painting…
