Fearless Friday, Blue & Green Bottles
Bottles have fascinated me lately
I couldn’t resist painting these beautiful blue and green bottles…
This was my inspiration photo source
I simplified it down to just the center blue bottle and the 2 green bottles
I started with a light pencil sketch and a first wash on the bottles
Blue washes on the center bottle, leaving white areas for the highlights
Then several greens on the stems and leaves
The tallest flower was painted by applying a clear wash
and then dropping Quinacridone Pink
onto the petal edges and letting it slowly fade down
The other flowers were painted with a bottom layer
of Quinacridone Coral and Pink
Petals were dabbed in, lighter petals at the top where they catch the light
Next I added stamens to the tall flower and
deepened the color on the stems and leaves
If you look closely at stems in water you will see that they refract at the water line
I darkened the label with Quinacridone Gold
I then added a few final washes to finish the bottles
Colorful shadows were added around the bottle bases
To finish, I indicated text on the label with a .01 black fine liner pen
and gave the painting a few splatters of color
“Blue & Green Bottles” 9″ x 12″ watercolor on 140 lb. cold pressed paper

As you have likely recognized, I’m crazy for bottles and have them in every shape, size and color. They are flower arranging so easy as you have captured in your painting. Lovely!

I’m so glad I found this. I have secretly desired greatly to paint with water colors! This is so colorful & simply stunning! I needed to experience this, it truly lifted my spirits high! I am a retired hairdresser who has been able to ‘create’ for 40 yrs & now I’ve been indulging in chalk painting! Nearly every piece of furniture I own has not escaped my paint brush. LOL! However, some day soon I will challenge the beauty of water colors & enjoy the satisfaction as you must also! Thank you!

Painting glass is always hard, you have to figure out what the light is doing inside the bottle as well as the outside. Such pretty colors, and I’m totally loving the photo you used for the inspiration…a work of art on it’s own! Thanks for a great tutorial!
