Creations, Harvest Tray Door Decoration

Welcome to week 3

of the “There’s No Place Like Home” Autumn Blog Hop!

hosted by Rachelle at My Hubbard Home

This week we are sharing Fall Wreaths and Door Decor

If you’re coming from Karin’s Cottage I know you saw something fabulous!

I have a garage full of wreaths and door decor

that I have made or bought over the years

and felt that surely I could find something

to recreate for today’s post…

Sure enough,

this forgotten tray was hanging there waiting to be used

Hmmm… 🤔

I grabbed some Fall picks and ribbon from my craft stash

and got busy

I decided to paint a black and white checked border

along the edge of the tray

To paint a checked pattern,

paint the whole area with one of the colors first,

When that’s dry, come back and paint the checks

with a flat square brush,

skipping every other spot to make the pattern

See tutorial here

While the white paint was drying

I played around with the picks

until I had a composition I liked

Then I attached them to the tray with a glue gun

Note: for outdoor use I recommend using a stronger glue like E6000 because over time, glue gun glue can loose adherence due to moisture and other outdoor conditions

I made a 6 loop bow with the pumpkin ribbon

and tied a length of black and white checked ribbon

in the center of the bow

I used floral wire to attach the bow to the top of the tray

and wove the ribbon tails around the sides

I must admit that sometimes I get ahead of myself

and in this case, I should have finished painting the border

before I added the ribbon 😬

I added the black checks with a flat square brush

which proved to be difficult

because the woven tray did not have a smooth surface

But once it was all finished you don’t notice the “bumpy” checks

I tried it out on the front door

Inside the front door

And outside on the fireplace mantel

And in the kitchen on a shelf

It’s very versatile!

Juicy Details

I’ve had these fall picks for several years but they are still available {or similar ones} at Hobby Lobby here

Very pretty! Love the tray! laura

  3. Jenna, what a cute use of a tray. I love it everywhere you placed it, but it really sings on your outdoor mantel! Enjoy this beautiful autumn day!

  4. Rachelle says:

Jenna, first, your wreath basket looks adorable! I’m always inspired by your creativity.

Second, please come over and paint a mural on my garage wall 🙂

Also the info on painting checks is a great tip. I want to give it a try.

    Thanks for joining today’s hop.

    • ha ha, my garage always surprises people 🙂 Painting checks is fun and easy, but do het several sizes of flat square brushes, that’s the secret. Thanks so much for the Autumn Blog Hop, it’s so much fun!

What a transformation of the plain tray into a lovely fall decorative piece. I like how versatile it is, looks great everywhere. Love those checks……..

  6. This tray is the cutest!!! Happy Fall Jenna!

  7. Cyndi Raines says:

What a cute idea, I liked it in every spot. You must have a mini craft store to be able to whip up such cute things at a moment’s notice. I like to buy ribbon when it goes on sale, but I need to pay more attention to other items too, to have more on hand for spontaneous projects. 🍊🍂

    • Thank you Cyndi, having a craft stash is great for spontaneous projects, I tend to buy things that catch my eye and then think of something to do with them later 🙂 Ribbon is a great thing to stock up on! I haven’t been to Hobby Lobby since February, I’m having serious withdrawl, but I am having fun using things I already have!

  8. Barbara Warner says:

You did a fabulous upcycle on this basket/tray! I love it. I love fall colors and decor anyway, and you have lifted your tray to a new level. It does look great – wherever you put it. Pays to hang onto picks and flowers you buy ahead of time – they’ll come in handy sooner or later. I love the way you put the ribbon on.

    • Thanks so much Barbara, it is satisfying to create something from things you already have! I am enjoying the tray on the kitchen shelf and it’s right by the patio door and easily moved to the outdoor mantel when we socially safe distance outside.

  9. Rhonda says:

Cute Jenna! As always! Glad that y’all survived the recent hurricane with minimal damage.

    • Thank you Rhonda! Our damage was minimal compared to some but it was a lot to us, I have been spending a lot of time the past 2 weeks with insurance and repair people trying to get on waiting list for roof and pier rebuilding, stressful!!

  10. lulu says:

Jenna, you continue to amaze me with your creative effort. I am so lacking in drawing/painting skills and have to find other creative outlets. I’m impressed by your wall of wreaths.

    • Thanks Linda, but you are queen of the loom! Hanging the wreaths on the garage walls is a great way to store them, plus it’s so easy to see what you have and find what you’re looking for!

  11. Sandra Magle says:

Loving this expressive idea. A wreath or door decor definitely doesn’t need to be round! The checkered rim painting made it! Hugs, Sandi

  12. This is really cute and a great idea. (Your garage looks lke mine with all the wreaths — only much neater!)

  13. Rosie M. says:

I love the way your tray came out!! The step-by-step is always appreciated: I love the way the suspense builds to see how it all will finally come together. Once again you’ve scored a wonderful decoration for the fall! I’m partial to it being on the outside fireplace mantel, but no matter where it lands, it’s sure to be an admired fall piece. Love your creativity, Jenna. It’s like you have a magic wand in your hand and *poof!* there’s a new artistic creation! Such fun!

  14. Wow I’m so impressed with your little decorated tray. You’re giving me lots of great ideas. By the way your outdoor stone fireplace and mantel are gorgeous. Must be a popular spot in the fall.

  15. This looks adorable Jenna. Love that truck. Did you paint it the design? Looks like a fun hop!

  16. So clever! Just love the way you put this one together!

  17. Karinbob says:

I am loving all these fun wreath ideas that everyone is sharing on the blog hop! So fun and unique. I used to have a tray just like that and never thought about turning it into a fun wreath for fall! Great idea. The picture of your garage wall with all the wreaths…I can totally relate! haha
    Karin

    • Thanks Karin, I remember that this tray was all the rage years ago, and it was a big MUST have, but that’s all I can remember and it’s been hanging in the garage for years 😂

  18. Rachelle says:

Jenna, I want to pin your picture, but can’t see anyway to do it

    • What browser do you use? If you use Firefox the pin button automatically pops up, but I just realized on Chrome it doesn’t, so I fixed it, thanks for letting me know! I can’t get it to work on Safari but I’ll keep working on that, thanks Rachelle

  19. Debra says:

Your tray is so cute, Jenna! I love that little crow!

  20. Always nice when we can find new uses for things we already have! Your tray turned out cute:@)

  21. Debbee says:

Jenna, I absolutely love your unique and wonderful decorated tray door (or mantle) decor! Had me at black and white check border, lol! You are so darn creative. Pinned. Oh and I also hang wreaths in my garage and finished basement on pegboard/hooks. But, I find I need to keep them all covered with clear dry cleaning bags.

  22. Ricki Treleaven says:

I do like how versatile it is, and I also like that it’s three dimensional rather than just a painted sign. Very clever, Jenna!

  23. CalypsointheCountry says:

What a cute idea for a tray! I always love to see things repurposed and you did such a beautiful job! Love the buffalo check too!
    Shelley

  24. Barbara at Mantel and Table says:

Oh my gosh – what a clever idea! I love that darling tray! Thanks for the great tips on how too – I’ll remember to paint first, ribbon later! 🙂

  25. Mary says:

Your harvest tray makes a wonderful welcome and door decor Jenna! Love the cute crow pick and your painted black and white checks! ♥

  26. Rita C. says:

Lol, I like seeing your garage wall of all your stuff! Cute arrangement on the revamped tray! (ps I used to have my wreaths on studs in our basement, but since the move, they’re all lined up along the top, inside of the storage unit!)

  27. You are so clever to think of a way to create a wreath out of a tray. My favorite spot that you shared is it hanging on your fabulous outdoor fireplace.

  28. Shannon@Belle Bleu Interiors says:

Jenna, I love the wreath you have made! How clever to use a tray…it turned out beautifully! I especially love it on your outdoor fire place mantel. That fireplace is gorgeous and what a wonderful spot to spend an autumn day! Happy October!

  29. Nancy says:

    Beautiful my friend!

  30. Chloe Crabtree says:

Wow, that is a lot of stuff hanging in your garage! But the styling of this tray for fall is just perfect! One thing I haven’t really styled before, it may be on my upcoming list of crafts!

    • ha, thanks Chloe, it was fun trying to create from my stash, I haven’t been to Hobby Lobby since February but I am finding lots of goodies via amazon 🙂 Happy crafting!

  31. Kitty says:

How clever you are, Jenna. You find uses from all kinds of things around your house. I always live your creativity.

  32. So cute, Jenna! Thanks for linking up with me.
